We live in a small cul de sac of 10 houses. On one side there are mature oak trees in the back gardens, and one couple have just put up an owl nest box in one of their trees. It had only been there a few days when a tawny owl was seen sitting on the edge of the box! We've been watching with bated breath - hoping it was a lady owl looking for a nesting site. It's been a roller coaster with most of the neighbours keeping a distant eye on events - is she/isn't she?
Much to our delight, the owners noticed her dropping a mouse into the box the other day. It was looking hopeful! Now there are 3 chicks. One is a little smaller than the others but they hatch sequentially, so fingers are crossed for all three of them.
We can see the nest box from the road, so I always pause and watch for a few minutes. It feels like our very own Spring Watch.
