    Near miss for bird family!

Late yesterday afternoon two of our friends called in. They are going on holiday today to Barnard Castle (presumably to test their eyesight) and came for a catch up before going. We were in the garden when they arrived so stayed there for a cuppa and chat. One of the friends is a keen bird watcher. She told me we had a nest with baby birds at the bottom of the garden, as she recognised the sound of the mother.
We then realised we could see the nest and baby birds, peeping out of the top of the pyracantha bush!

To cut a long story short, the evening before OH had been cutting some of it back to go into the green garden waste bin which was emptied yesterday. She had removed all the branches above the nest with an electric hedge trimmer, and been totally unaware of the nest!
Our friend was worried that the mother would not return, we were all worried about the fierce sun on the nest.
At my suggestion OH concocted temporary shade from a parasol on a pole. Then she and our friend gently arranged some more branches above, but not touching the nest to provide shelter. We took the parasol down.
These branches will probably need adding to or replacing as they dry out.

We were all a bit shocked at the near miss those birds had. The bush now looks a mess as OH intended to finish the job once the green bin was empty. She will now leave it until the birds vacate the nest.
We were all pleased to see mummy bird come back to the nest a couple of times while we were still out there.

    PHEW!

Gem, that was a near miss! If DH hadn't trimmed the bush you would never have known.

I think they were hoping to just grow and fly the nest undisturbed in the middle of the bush Lizzie. Little knowing their cosy shaded nest would become a roofless penthouse apartment!

I am just thinking, I don't know about in the UK but here no one is allowed to trim bushes, trees etc from 1st March to 1st June, I mean councils etc, especially the long grass etc can't be mowed. This is to save the nests.

That seems a sensible rule Lizzie.

Mummy bird was back and forth as we sat on the patio this morning.
Very bright hot sunshine so I'm glad they have cover again.

That little Dunnock family certainly had a narrow escape. It's so hard to see nests sometimes, and I think tree surgeons aren't allowed to operate between March and July because of nesting birds. I think we've got a nest of sparrows in a Pittosporum bush. I keep seeing a little flock of youngsters flitting in and out of it, but I can't see a nest and don't want to risk disturbing them.

OH will be very cautious in future!

So pleased no birds came to any harm. We get dunnocks in the garden.
We love to sit in the garden watching birds taking bits to build a nest.
In our garden we have 2 large fir/pine trees, not sure which.
Every year we get birds nesting in them.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Nanto - do you get the same type of birds each year?

The little bird family flew the nest last weekend

The nest is so neat and tidy. A real work of art.

Well done mum and dad birds, seeing their babies off safely into the big wide world.

I think bird nests are amazing - how they know how to build safe, strong nests like that.
