Caught the culprit

This morning I discovered a pansy plant had been pulled out of one of my tubs on my patio. The compost had been hollowed out and the ball of roots had been separated from the plant,
I first suspected a cat but we hadn't seen one in our garden since we had Millie dog, I had discovered a great tit had nested above this pot but high up on the house in a disused alarm box. We had seen the parents flying in and out and heard the babies squarking. However, we didn't think that they would make such a deep hollow.
Tonight I covered that bald part of the tub with a stiff sheet of plastic. Then sat in the conservatory to keep watch. It was a blackbird that had been tossing the compost over the side to search for worms. It alighted on the sheet of plastic and tried to get at the compost. I couldn't believe it as it is against the house wall. At least I have solved the mystery!

I thought at first you were going to say a squirrel but not a Black bird lazy bird didn't want to dig hard soil to much effort hahaha

Our courtyard is paved and up until six months ago it had soil between the slabs. The blackbirds used to have a lovely time chucking the soil looking for something to eat

Blackbirds are very good at digging over the garden!! We've got bark on one border and I'm forever having to rake it back off the lawn because the blackbirds toss it about looking for worms, etc.

We have a problem with squirrels digging into our pots to bury their peanuts. Someone around here puts whole shelled nuts out, I will give them a whack if I find out who it is! There is a big yew tree just to the left of my kitchen window (upstairs maisonette) and there is blackbird nest in there, I have scared off several magpies trying to get in there by banging on the windows unfortunately I am not here all the time!

We had some garden ornaments,the ones on spikes that can be put in tubs.Some of ours were straw girls, and the blackbirds pulled all the hair off them, when they were nest building last year.At the moment we have blue tits nesting in a nest box at the side of the shed.

You could say it was thinking outside of the 'bird' box. We welcomed back our nesting swifts this week. The nest is in the eaves (spelling?) at the side of the house. I wonder how Fred & his mate, the owls, are getting on?
