    Bird identification

for about a week now I have had two little birds in the border near to my sitting room. I am not sure what they are, they are a grey colour, long tails and very pointed beaks. They spend a long time in the border, I presume they are finding things to eat. I have looked in the bird book and on-line and am wondering if they are Dunnocks. Any bird fanciers on here?

I know little to nothing about birds, Plant, but OH knows a lot more.

They could be Dunnocks, but looking at photos they look more speckled brown than grey maybe?
You could be right though Plant.
OH wondered if they could be long tailed tits?

I don't think so, we also have those in the garden. The male bird (I presume) doers have more colour on its back, sort of like sparrow but it is a much smaller bird than a sparrow and I only see two.

Plant - I'm not sure either. Dunnocks look a bit like female house sparrows and I'm never sure which is which.

Could it be a Pied wagtail - they have long tails and are greyish. there's also a White wagtail which I think is more greyish. I think they're in the same family as dunnocks. Scroll down on the link below to see both types.

Wagtails do stand and wag their tails up and down. Some years ago one fell in love with his own image in OH's car wing mirror. In the end we had to wrap the wing mirror up when the car was on the drive!

Definitely not a wagtail, no tail wagging. I still think they are a pair of Dunnocks, (related to sparrows), they have very pointed beaks. I am trying to get a closer look with some binoculars. Lovely story of a wagtail falling in love with your wing mirror Daisy.

Sorry Plant but I can't help. Are they too small, fast to take a picture?

Yes and they feed on the ground amongst the leaves in the border.

Plant - I think you're right. They are sounding like Dunnocks.
