Gem - thanks for the vote of confidence!! Yes, I do know, but not necessarily in a way that will help, because everyone has different software and different ways of doing things!
Here's what I do know.
The maximum file (ie photo) size you can upload onto GRU is 2Mb (2 meg).
When you load a picture from your phone/camera to your computer you should have some choices about editing it. This can include things like making it lighter or darker, changing to black and white and various other options. One option might by something like 'File size' or 'Image Dimensions'. Within that choice it will say how big your file is. If it's more than 2MB you need to make it smaller.
Ways to reduce the file size: Cropping, as Oma says, but you haven't always got room to do this. "Fit into" which would have a range of sizes described in pixels per inch or centimetre. Or there may be two boxes with numbers in for 'Width' and 'Height'. Choose the largest number (Height if your pic is portrait shape, Width if it's landscape shape) and put in a lower number. The other dimension will adjust accordingly and so will the size of the file. I usually find a maximum of 1,000 pixels will give me a file size of around 2MB. If it's still too big, decrease the number you put in by say 100 pixels and check again, until you get it under 2MB. Then press OK or Save! * See word of warning below!
Ignore the Resolution if you're not printing the picture. If you are printing it most printers work on 300 dpi. 72 is Low Resolution.
*Just a word of warning. If this picture is precious remember to give it a different file name BEFORE you SAVE. If you save it with the SAME file name you will overwrite (ie erase) the original full-sized file/picture and you won't be able to get it back, unless of course, it's still in your phone or on your memory card.
Second warning: If you can't change the file name after editing, create a copy of the original and save that with a different name (eg, IMG_1154copy.JPG) and then edit the Copy and save it with that copy version's file name. This will preserve your original photo unchanged.
If any of the above helps I will put it as a sticky on the Official GransRus Area. Let me know. As I say all software is different, but generally you reduce the size of the file by reducing the pixels.

Nana - if you have a moment, would you mind trying some/any of my guesswork, please? If none of it works, I don't want to sticky useless information.
I'm very out of touch with Windows terminology. When I get a bit of time I'll borrow OH's laptop and see what it has to offer!"Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognise how good things really are. "

Thanks so much for all the help Daisy, now I don't want to complicate things (not much anyway) but when I have made the changes will it work on all my pics or do I have to change every pic.I am so dense with techi stuff I shouldn't be let out.
I would find it very helpful if put on a sticky for future reference.Keep Calm,You're Fabulous

I've always had trouble seeing everyone's pictures on GRU. My main point of access is my mobile fone, Samsung. Just by accident I came across the tiny word 'filter' when I went into media the other day. I could see a couple of pics but under the picture square it would say a larger number. This has always puzzled me.
When I clicked on 'filter' there were options to click on.... such as the last month etc. Once I clicked on the right option I could see ALL the fotos. Just thought I'd share this in case anyone else is having the same problem."Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

Lizzie - Adobe Photoshop is the gold standard in photo editing! If that's what you've got the world is your oyster.
In Photoshop, If you need to change the file size of a photo (eg reduce it below 2 meg) you can do it in Size, which I think might be under Edit. As I said in the long post above, if you reduce the pixel on the longest side to 1000 per inch you should be under 2 meg. You should be able to leave "print" at 300 dpi (or whatever your default is) as you're not printing, 72 dpi makes is so pixilated you can't get a decent print even at 6" x 4"!
The cautionary note above about saving your edited picture with a different filename holds true. I usually just add "Proc" (for processed) or "LR" (low resolution) before the dot in the file name.
To do it on your iphone, I think you'd have to have the Photoshop software loaded onto your phone.
If you want to edit directly in your iphone: call up the picture.
Click on "Edit" in the top right corner.
Choose which action you want and make your adjustments.
A useful one is "Light" because you can increase the Contrast a touch which makes it look better online. Generally less is more with those controls but it's fun to experiment. You can use "Revert" if you don't like what you've done. My iPhone is really old, newer ones have more options and better controls.
