I like to make a cake for GC's birthday just for a bit of fun, sometimes i get it right (well as long as it is family only, wouldnt put it on a birthday table at a party..)

So last night baked a cake for baby S, trying to make a Mickey Mouse one, made the sponge last night, went to cut through middle this morning and it broke sort of bits crumbled... thought my icing would cover it, sadly i have put icing on and will have it with custard............no good at all

I followed instructions but am clearly doing something wrong, well will have a mad rush to Morrisons for a boxed one.....hmmm, not what i planned...

Sending DS to the shop LOL, awww man i'm sick OH said i can make lovely pastries, but cakes etc, even yorkshire puds, i'm hopeless, he never said it in that many words, he knows what would happen with the rolling pin...

I used to love baking but then I was younger, slimmer and although I worked full time, strangely I seemed to have MORE time than I do now

And if I do bake then we eat it and get fat! I'll never forget the delicious bread I made 11 years ago with my new breadmaker that managed to put on half a stone in a month!!!

We've been to Aldi recnetly as they opened a new one locally and what a lot they have to offer at such GOOD prices, and the cakes there

Pearl - it's the taste that counts I always say. Unless of course it's sunk in the middle or I've forgotten some vital ingredient, then it's just for the look of it, not for eating. Better luck next time.

You can always tell everyone that one of the grandchildren made it. Then it would be mean to make rude comments.

We should pair up. My cakes usually go down well but my pastry never does. I tend to use frozen - if it's good enough for Delia it's good enough for me!

When DDs 1 and 2 were small, I had a Jane Asher cake book, and I made lovely cakes for their birthdays. Once DD3 came along, M&S, Sainsbury, Tesco etc all made nice novelty cakes, so I didn't bother any more

Well Pearl I was going to ask you to make my OH 70 th birthday cake now I will have to look elsewhere, to be honest I don't make good cakes can't buy one too early as have to transport it 150 mls away to our holiday destination hope there is a Sainsbutys close by, also wouldn't want him to see it DS will have to transport it if bought at home as DD is taking us

I will try making another tomorrow, going to buy new cake tins, think that is the problem, cake did not last too long in here, all got eaten so no waste... think i will use your tip She and blame the kids, now if i knew you wanted a cake Qwerty i would have started practising...never mind hope you do have a sainsburys or a good kitchen to make one yourself...

Qwerty - could you order one online (from Sainsbury's or wherever will be convenient) and arrange to collect it from the store nearest your holiday destination? I know you can order things like party food to be collected. It might save you a bit of hassle too.

I'd recommend my DD Qwerty, but she's a bit far away!! her cakes are a work of art, even though I say so myself!!
