Today my mum came over for Sunday lunch. A friend of ours, J, was calling in during the afternoon for a quick cuppa. We told mum this over lunch, and told her quite a lot about the friend, including the fact that her house was for sale. Mum had met this friend once, very briefly 3 or 4 years ago, mums eyesight isn't good, so we wouldn't expect her to recognise J.
J arrived, I let her in, and she went to say hello to mum. I said " Mum, this is J, I think you have met".
I asked what people would like to drink and went off to the kitchen, instructing OH to go back to mum and J, as they don't really know each other ( and mum misses a lot of what is said unless you speak loudly)
Teas and coffees made I returned to find some confusion. Although we had told mum our friend J was coming and I introduced them ( mum didn't hear that it turned out!) Mum had decided this was my friend C.
I have known C since I was 11 and so has my mum. C has been married, very happily to P since she was 17. Mum knows them both well.
As mum thought this was C, she said to her " Are you on your own?". As I wasn't there I can only imagine J's surprise at being asked such a strange question by someone she hardly knows. Then, on hearing OH mention a house viewing, mum said to J " Why are you moving?!". Poor J apparently said "Well, my partner and I have split up.....". I presume at this point the the penny dropped and mum realised this was not in fact, C. They are physically fairly similar, and mums eyesight isnt good, but we had told her J was coming!!
My mum was extremely embarrassed. No way would she cross examine anyone she didnt know as to their reasons for moving, or anything else! As she thought it was C, who I'm sure will never want to move, she was so surprised she had to ask her.
I don't think mum will get over this for ages, she kept mentioning it!
If I had been there I think I would have spotted that there was some misunderstanding early on. As I was in the kitchen, I missed it all!
