    It's noisy next door!

We have lived in this house for 5 years. In the other side of the semi were an elderly couple. Lady with Altzheimers, man in a wheelchair, only one leg . Sad situation. Carers came 4 times a day to the lady. Son and, daughter came daily to visit, bring shopping etc. SIL and GS regularly visited. We felt sorry for everyone. A couple of years ago the man died, and the lady moved in with her DD and SIL. Since then we have to all intents and purposes lived in a detached house, as next door is unoccupied . No need to be quiet for the last 2 New Years Eves!

It is a puzzle to us what is going on regarding the house. We think the lady may have died, as for several months now family keep coming and taking things away, or working in house or garden. We expect a For Sale or To Let sign, but none appear!!
This morning, early, a window company van appeared on the drive. We presume this is the last step before selling or renting the house - but who knows? !

What I do know is it is extremely noisy!! More so as we have become accustomed to no one next door!

Gem we always lived in a semi or terrace so we were used to noise and being aware of making noise , it took us quite a while when we moved into this detached house to realise we could have the TV as loud as we liked and let the children run up and down stairs without worrying about the neighbours , you will find it strange to go back to being cautious about being noisy not that I can imagine you being noisy anyway 😁

We're not very noisy Oma, no OH's DIY is the noisiest thing. I used to have to remind her No DIY after 8.30pm when our neighbours were there, as the carers put the lady to bed then!

Before this I lived an Edwardian terraced house for 25 years. Neighbours both sides, but so solidly built none of us heard our neighbours. OH lived in a modern bungalow where you could (literally) hear someone sneeze in the next room through closed doors. Our present house is somewhere between the 2. Built in the 60's it has a much more solid construction that the newer ones around here, such as the one OH had.

Gem I can testify to the noise - I am surrounded by workmen, no windows, no front door. Place is a tip! I intended to continue working but there was a server error and I couldn't get on the internet plus it is flipping freezing but thank goodness it is not chucking it down like it was yesterday. I am sitting with two jumpers, my coat and boots on. I have a headache, my nose is running and I need the loo but the window man is in there!

Aww Ziz! I wish you lived nearer, you could come to use our loo, get warm, and have a cuppa. It sounds as though where you are is noisier than here!

Thanks Gem. Well it is double the noise actually as downstairs are having their windows done as well. We are also having air conditioning units in the sitting room and bedrooms but I can tell you that right now they are not needed! I might have to go and sit in the car soon because I am turning into a block of ice.......

It could be Gem that it's not going up for sale or rent they could have family member moving in or renting or just someone they know a private arrangement all will probably reveal itself.
You have my sympathy Zizzi we had our first house gutted and moved in with my parents for a couple of maths to be honest I would have preferred to have slept rough it wasn't a good experience, but when we got the house back together I loved it, unfortunately it only had 2bedrooms so had to move on eventually it will be worth it

In our last house we had our new windows put in when it was snowing it was freezing me and the bird went and sat in the bedrooms while they did downstairs then downstairs while they did upstairs , The poor bird couldn't understand why he wasn't let out of his cage all day and he squared his head off at the noise , thankfully they were very quick and did a lovely job , leave the cleaning till tomorrow Zizi when you are warm and the dust has settled

Something similar going on here. We are one end of a terrace of four. The tenants from the other end moved out before Christmas and since then there has been an awful lot of very loud banging. We received a Christmas card with three names on it but still no sign of anyone actually living there. Would guess they are going to live there themselves once they have finished their demolition.

Well the flipping fantastic news is that I DO NOT HAVE TO CLEAN THEM!!!!! The fixers are cleaning them, yippppeeeeee....... There is quite a lot of dust though but I will leave that until tomorrow. At last it is relatively warm in here. I think it is going to make a huge difference as the old windows were very draughty and badly fitted or cr@p as one of the fitters said when he first saw them! The rubber surrounds were deteriorating and many of the windows were cloudy so now I can see through all of them. I haven't been downstairs to see the front door in place but it looked nice when I saw it propped against the scaffolding. That is another way of keeping warm as the current door is half glazed and it is very cold in the lower hall (bit of an exagerration as there is just enough room to open the door). The new door just has a small decorative window at the top and a spy hole and door knocker (neither of which we previously had) mind you whether I will be able to see through the spy hole is questionable.

Zizi - what a relief you don't have to clean your new windows. It sounds like a horrible, chilly, messy day, but worth it. It will be warm, quiet and light!

We had new windows fitted to our last house and somehow it co-incided with me being on a field trip to Swansea with students. Then we had replacement windows in our current house, and all the action took place when I was at work!

Gem - I wonder what's happening! the lady could have died, or perhaps the house is being got ready for sale to pay for her care. How polite that nobody's asked the workmen. We've been amused by the number of passersby who asked us what we are doing to our front garden. I've taken some photos today so I'll put the up later (or tomorrow).

We had new windows in quite a few years ago, and it was one of the coldest February's we have ever had.Was worth it though.
I wonder what is going to happen to the house next door to Gem.Will be interesting to find out.
