    Reading other thread about Corned beef pie and Plant saying it sounded like comfort food I wondered what regional food others have that are a must .

    Hear in the north east any gathering be it Wedding ,Funeral ,Birthday , family get together if you don't have several Corned beef pies its not a party, its the first thing people think about doing if having a buffet .

    It varies from Family to Family , some like more potato some like more corned beef , we like a good combination of the two .
    Usually for get together's its made in a big square tin and the first thing everyone goes for ,

    When B makes it for family get together's he also makes several Corned beef pasties too and hides them so if we don't get any before everyone has devoured it we have them after when they all gone home

    Another must is Apple pie Deep filled with lots of sugar on top giving it a nice and crunchy golden topping

    Love the sound of corned beef pie, how do you make it? Don’t think we have any really regional dishes here but as a family we love apple crumble, shepherds pie, chicken pie...comfort food again I suppose, but that’s just us.

    Interesting to hear about regional dishes though, nice to have other ideas. 🌮🍕🥧🍲

        Not party food, but absolutely essential to my childhood were Oatcakes. Staffordshire oatcakes - very specific to the region. You bought them from oatcake shops and queues would form early. The shops would also sell pikelets which were thicker and smaller.

        Oatcakes are best with bacon and egg. You warm then up slightly and then roll them up with the bacon and egg like a pancake. Or you could toast them and eat them with butter dripping through the holes. I think you can get them in supermarkets in Stoke nowadays, but they're not quite as good as the authentic ones home made by the shopkeeper.

            Love Staffordshire Oatcakes, we used to buy them in the butchers Daisy.

            We don't have any regional dishes that I can think of, of course there are the jellied eels in London. This used to be a cherry growing area so cherry pie was a favourite

              When I was a student in Crouch End, north London, we all used a lovely little sandwich shop down the hill. (I may make a thread about it!!)
              There for the first time I had pizza. Little pizzas, and most of us asked for it without olives.
              My favourite thing she served (stodgy, calorific but wonderful) was bread pudding. We had bread and butter pudding here of course but not bread pudding, this was completely new to me. I would love to have it again and could kick myself that I saw it in bakery window in St Ives when we went to Cornwall and didn't go in and buy any!

                We use to have bread pudding with our Xmas dinner Gem you can buy it still around Xmas time

                    Qwerty, I too wonder if you mean bread sauce? Or did you have it as a pudding instead of Christmas pud?
                    Bread pudding is a cake. Dark brown , stodgy, very moist, with dried fruit in it and spices like cinammon. Yummy

                      Mmm, bread and butter pudding lis scrummy but DH likes bread pudding which is much stodgier and cake like. Not good for our waistlines but delicious,

                        True corned beef pie up hear is ,
                        Short crust pastry ,

                        Corned beef and boiled mashed potatoes with finely chopped onion , salt and pepper all mixed together
                        line a plate or tinfoil dish with short crust pastry fill with the corned beef mix and top with short crust pastry
                        Very simple

                        no sauce or stock cubes or beans like Paul Hollywoods recipe that's just wrong

                          Used to make corned beef pie for DC when we were on our own and OH was working away. Didn't put potatoes in it, mixed the coned beef with onions and tomato ketchup before putting it in shortcrust pastry. OH doesn't like coned beef so haven't made it for a long time. The mixture is also very nice in sandwiches.

                          In the days when school dinners were made on the premises the cook in the first school I taught in when I moved down here, used to send samples of the day's pudding to the staffroom at break time. Was the first time I'd had bread pudding and oh, how yummy it was! Still warm from the oven!It's sometimes on sale at the local baker's.Can't stand bread and butter pudding though...yuck!

                          In Slovakia I had a sort of Christmas pudding with my chicken. I was a bit sceptical, but it was delicious!
