    Scufflers

Have any of you heard of them.
We were having a sandwich earlier, and i said i'll do cheese on some of the scufflers we bought.
On what said hubby. He said he had never heard of scufflers.
So i googled it for him.I couldn't believe he had never heard of them.
    Below is what google said.

A scuffler is a word in Yorkshire dialect originating from the Castleford area meaning a large bread cake.
This bread is always baked in a roughly triangular shape and is similar to the Northern stottie, but lighter.

I have always known them as small t cakes/breadcakes.
Possible that only Yorkshire folk have heard of them.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Never heard of them, either - but sounds tasty!

I bought some pikelets in the supermarket last week, thinking they would be proper North Staffordshire pikelet (a bit like NS Oatcakes, but smaller and thicker, and I think they are even tastier) . I should have known - they were nothing like the Real Thing - just like small, flatter crumpets. I was so disappointed!

Plant - in Stoke there used to be oatcake shops, selling nothing but oatcakes and pikelets, and you'd go and get a dozen, freshly made, rolled up in those big square of tissue paper that bakeries used to us and have them warmed with bacon, cheese and tinned tomatoes.

I always keep a packet of crumpets in the freezer. When i was little we always called them pikelets, so did hubby.
Now i have learnt that pikelets are the flat thin ones.Hubby still says pikelets when he means crumpets.
When we were kids, you could only buy crumpets in the winter months.
Apparently, it was because of the batter they were made from, it wouldn't keep in the summer months.
Now,you can buy them all year round, probably due to additives and preservatives.

I had never heard of scuffles but I know of stotties but I have never eaten either of them

Nana2,I also keep a packet of crumpets in the freezer and now I come to think of it at one time you could only buy them during the winter time. They have gone the same way as hot x buns , you could buy them in Tesco today if desired !

Clover - I've found a supplier of oatcake and pikelet mix - I don't know if it's close to the real thing, but I think I'll give it a try - bacon doesn't seem right without oatcakes, even after all these years of exile!

Staffordshire Oatcakes and Oatcake mix to buy or order online. The Oatcake is a regional food, typical of North Staffordshire and especially Stoke-on-Trent. I was amused to see the Potteries baby vests too. "Mum's gone up 'Anley' would have been favourite in our house!

                          ..Stottie
A stottie cake or stotty is a type of bread that originated in North East England. It is a flat and round loaf, usually about 30 centimetres in diameter and 4 centimetres deep, with an indent in the middle produced by the baker.
                          Lovely with Bacon or Sausage

I have heard of Stotties but not Scuffies we also have Pikelets in our local bakery which always sell as soon as they are put out, what we did used to have on Mondays was Potato Cakes made with the leftover potatoes from Sunday lunch mum would add cheese and onion to them and we would feast on them when we came in from school dripping with butter, not very good for your colesterol but very yummy indeed.
