    Taster menu

Has anyone ever experienced a taster menu?
Tomorrow night OH 3 golf friends and I are going to try one!
It is 5 course taster menu at the local college, a few miles from where we live. We had an afternoon tea there earlier this year and it was very nice. Everything is prepared and cooked by the catering students and they are the waiters too.
    I'm looking forward to it

Yes, Gem, I have. When a chef who is now a well-known Mitchelin-starred chef first opened a restaurant in our village we went with a friend. If I remember rightly, it was about 10 courses, with appropriate wine with each course - all very tiny, but totally delicious. OH and our friend came out of the restaurant and straight into the chippy, still starving hungry!!!

The college taster menu will be brilliant. College restaurants are really good value, as they are used to train the students, and going at this time of the academic year is great, because they will all have done at least 2 terms and have gained good experience. I'm sure you'll love it - and the students love it if you ask them a bit about their course and give appropriate feedback. I remember going to another college's training restaurant one day, and after a very filling lunch chose fresh fruit as dessert. I asked for an orange and the poor student had to peel and segment it with a knife and fork in front of me. His hands were shaking with nerves, and I felt awful as I hadn't realised that was what they did!

We did last year . a very upmarket place , it was a Christmas present from our DD and SIL , 7 course but all small and delicious .one that sticks in my mind was a Red pepper Macaroon not the size of a fifty P but gosh was it good . I must admit Brian and James were still hungry after considering it was £100 per couple , but we were paying for the name ,
I agree with Daisy the catering college will be superb , we used to often go to one on our coast for lunch all silver service as they were training in all aspects of the catering industry . First class food first class service at a really good price , I'm sure you will love it
Im not fat just 6ft too small

We were treated to a tasting menu at Purnells a few years ago. Tiny courses but really delicious. By the end we were comfortably full. Not sure I would pay for it again but a lovely experience. The college menu looks really good.

I would have been there too if it was free Qwerty

Last nights meal was superb, just excellent. Wonderful flavours, professional presentation. extremely upmarket!
One of the ladies were very happily surprised as she imagined us eating in some sort of canteen!

The soup, salmon course, the lamb, and the elderflower jelly with sorbet were perfect. We couldn't imagine anything better and all enjoyed them thoroughly.
Discussing it afterwards, none of us enjoyed the beetroot and goats cheese ravioli that much. The pink filled pasta looked like some funny creature! The 2nd dessert menu wasn't enjoyed totally either. the rhubarb ice cream was lovely, but the white chocolate mousse was too set for a mousse (in our opinion) and a bit sickly.
Those two minor criticisms aside this was an outstanding meal, worthy of a top restaurant. £26 for 6 courses including coffee is amazing and even their wine is cheap. £12.95 for a bottle.
A wonderful night, and something we would all do again.

Sounds very good value. The university my OH worked at had a catering school and he had lunch there every day and then would tell me what he had each day and I had only managed to grab some food between looking after 2 small children, very good for the waistline.

When DGD was at catering college we would often go to the college restaurant and enjoy some of their lovely food. She is now a sous chef in a lovely gastro pub in the Hampshire countryside and cooking wonderful meals.
