    Vitamins and Supplements

I wonder if anyone else takes vitamins or supplements regularly. In the Winter we both take vitamin D as this seems to be recommended everywhere. We also take Omega 3 oil capsules all the year round.
The oil capsules are supposed to be good for all sorts of things, even memory. Providing I can remember to take them of course.

My cupboard contains several vitamin and mineral supplements. It is actually taking them that is the problem! I took them when I had a virus over Christmas and New Year and felt low, once better I never remember to!

No! But I do eat a good handful of almonds every morning for calcium. They taste much nicer than those horrid pills. And I take every opportunity to get out in the sun yo bood my Vit D. Again, much more pleasant than swallowing tablets.

15-20 minutes in the sun per day does a power of good. No sunscreen unless you have moles or a skin that burns very quickly. Just let the sun do its job and give you the Vit D you need. Although being honest in the winter I top it up with the supplements too. I also eat almonds almost every day and walnuts twice a week as they have been proven to make your arteries more elastic. Brazil nuts for Selenium and Vit B, although all nuts are loaded with the B vitamins.

Vitamin D is recommended for Winter months in northern Europe where there is limited sun during that period. Even when there is some sun to be seen (not that often in the Winter) apparently we have so much of our bodies covered (because it is still cold) that the small area that is exposed is insufficient to absorb much vitamin D. I don't think my effort at sitting close to the window on a sunny day is any good either.

I believe you are right BL. There's been a lot of research on the value of Vit D., although some of it is rather negative, on the whole I think in this country it is wise to take it. They do this in Scandinavia, well they have to really.

In recently had a bone density scan due to two small fractures in my feet. It came back clear but I was advised to take vit D and calcium. I have bought the tablets, both in one capsule, had them since last Saturday but you have to take them with a full meal and I keep forgetting! I also drink Emergen C which is a supplement claiming energy release and immunity support (whatever that means). As I am coughing like an old pipe smoker today and have a very snotty nose I am not sure what the fizzy stuff is supposed to make me immune to!

I would prefer to get my vit D from the sun but my work is so inside and travelling on tubes and trains so not much opportunity at the moment. still holiday shortly so plenty of sun then I hope,

After my blood tests I was on a course of very high strength Vid D. A few months passed & the same happened again, with the same treatment. I'm now on a small dose of Vit D daily. No probs.

We take a general vitamin tablet and a glucosamine tablet all year. I tend to think that they will top up any glaring deficiencies in our diet, but not so much that we're overdosing ourselves. I also started taking Vit C + zinc after a succession of coughs and colds last winter, and I do think that has helped fight off the bugs. If possible we go o holiday at the end of October - somewhere nice and sunny and again, I think that boosts our Vit D for the coming winter.

Our cupboard seems to get bigger and bigger each year with extra vitamins we add in! The latest to be added are Vitamin C ( I REALLY don't want anymore colds thank you GS!) Vitamin D & calcium. Glucosamine, linseed oil capsules (instead of cod liver oil) feverfew for migraine have had pride of place for many years, then I have my prescribed tablets! Oh, forgot...my latest for the past 4 weeks...Manuka honey, cheapest place is Aldi's I think. My sister in law swears by it, so willing to give it a go. I have to admit, I do feel I have a bit more energy. Stayed up until 10pm last night!
