    BEET THE PRESSURE

    BEET THE PRESSURE

A daily glass of beetroot juice can lower blood pressure in people diagnosed with hypertension, according to new research by the British Heart Foundation.

Interestingly, the finding even applied to patients whose blood pressure was not successfully controlled by drug treatment.
The juice used in the study was James White Beet It Organic Juice Beetroot, £2.99 for 750ml, from ocado.com.

I wonder if the same effects can be had by eating beetroot?? I love it (and have high BP) but not sure about the juice option.

The juice is lovely but quite expensive, although we also use a juicing machine Gem. I have borderline BP so I keep it from going too high and needing meds by drinking Beets. Currently we are so busy I have bought the juice from Waitrose, but intend to return to the cheaper option soon. You only buy beetroot in its raw state BTW, to have optimum effect. Eating it is also an option but, you have to eat a LOT and every day to get the same effect as the juice. I've done a lot of research into this!

I'd like to see the research. I wonder how large the sample size was and what the controls were. I'd also like to know who sponsored the research. I've always been a bit sceptical about these wonder foods - but then, I'm an old cynic!

That is so helpful. Thank you. What's interesting is that it's not just beetroot but cabbage, lettuce and other vegetables. And also that roasting or steaming the vegetables is also effective.

So, we come back to the advice we've been given for some time. EAT YOUR GREENS, or DRINK THEM

I don't know why, but I've never liked beetroot. Such a pity.

My OH loves beetroot but do be warned. He had beetroot in salad while he was doing the bowel cancer home test. Twice the results were positive, so he had to undergo a colonoscopy after 24 hours of drinking of a medicated drink. It turned out that there was nothing untoward but beetroot affects the results. There is no warning on the test and he felt very guilty using NHS time. It was also unpleasant for him to go through the procedure.

Thank you. Such a shame there is no warning on the test, naught NHS....costing themselves more money by putting someone through this whereas by printing a warning of foods affecting the outcome of the test would have been better all round..That's very helpful MillieB

I'm not sure about drinking the juice, but when we have a meal, that has mashed potatoes, we always put pickled beetroot on.

I could never eat it before I grew my own. I couldn't move on from the horrid cubes we were given with school dinners! I eat it now but not sure I would enjoy drinking the juice.
