    Red Meat

DH visits the GP fairly regularly as he has regular blood tests for PSA levels (prostate) and cholesterol. The last time he went they did full bloods just to check as he had some other miscellaneous symptoms.
He went back yesterday and was told that his haemoglobin was a bit low. The GP asked him if he was eating enough red meat. DH pointed out that the instructions from the GP a few years back when his cholesterol levels were a bit high was to stop eating red meat and just have the occasional meal with chicken or fish. Now he is being told to increase his red meat! Can't win.

This seems to be a repeating 'theme' amongst the medical profession, they keep changing their minds about what we should/should not do,eat, take etc etc. I stick to a little of what you fancy does you good school of thought lol.

We recently cut down on red meat and not being a fish lover it has been hard for me. Tonight we had Shepherds pie which was tasty. This is music to my ears. 😆

Red meat is a good source of iron, but so are lots of other foods! (Sorry GM if I've burst your bubble x) Also low haemoglobin might not be caused by iron deficiency. BL - I would ask the doctor to be more specific about what is causing the low result. I'm not scaremongering, but sometimes I think doctors don't give proper explanations.

We have what I consider to be a good variety. I love chicken and fish, husband hates fish although he will eat shellfish and I can occasionally get him to have seared tuna. We have lean mince in the form of chilli, bolognaise etc. Lots of pasta - oh he likes tuna as well. We usually have one day which is vegetarian but if I told him that is what is is he would moan! Personally I get fed up with the various information we are given. One day you will die five years early if you eat red meat/drink wine/have a Jaffa cake once a day and then the next day it is all good for you. I think as long as we are sensible and we do not have any really obvious health problems we should eat and drink what we like. Also personally I think gin and tonic is a very good stress reliever

Read this Zizi. Turns out gin is actually good for you in several ways.

Did anyone see the programme on BBC One about red meat tonight? They were definitely not in favour of processed meat like ham, sausages, bacon, chorizo etc, and barbecuing can be dodgy because of the smoke. It seems marinating the meat first and using a gas BBQ is the least 'dangerous' option. The end message appeared to be that red meat provides essential nutrients in far greater quantities than nuts and veggies, but there are increased risks for bad cholesterol, heart disease and cancer, so (as we all already knew) moderation is the key thing!
