I've just downloaded an app called Sugar Smart from the App Store. It's free. All you do is scan in the bar code on any product whatsoever and it will then show you how many cubes of sugar it contains.
I've just scanned in two items: one is a Munch Bunch yoghurt which I get in for the grandchildren - 11.7 cubes of sugar in a pack of four. I had no idea. And I shan't buy those again. The other was a jar of Hellman's mayonnaise which contains 3.5 cubes. If I make my own, I don't add sugar or salt. It isn't authentic or necessary. Again, really quite shocking.
And I'm someone who reckons she is pretty clued up about food and cooking.
Obviously if I bake cakes or a crumble for example, I'm well aware of how much sugar I'm using, but these are small portion eaten occasionally. It's the amount of hidden sugar in so many products where you wouldn't expect it, that I find so shocking.
So ladies, download that app and use it when you shop. You'll be surprised.
