Astonished and shocked. Get this now

I've just downloaded an app called Sugar Smart from the App Store. It's free. All you do is scan in the bar code on any product whatsoever and it will then show you how many cubes of sugar it contains.

I've just scanned in two items: one is a Munch Bunch yoghurt which I get in for the grandchildren - 11.7 cubes of sugar in a pack of four. I had no idea. And I shan't buy those again. The other was a jar of Hellman's mayonnaise which contains 3.5 cubes. If I make my own, I don't add sugar or salt. It isn't authentic or necessary. Again, really quite shocking.

And I'm someone who reckons she is pretty clued up about food and cooking.

Obviously if I bake cakes or a crumble for example, I'm well aware of how much sugar I'm using, but these are small portion eaten occasionally. It's the amount of hidden sugar in so many products where you wouldn't expect it, that I find so shocking.

So ladies, download that app and use it when you shop. You'll be surprised.

It IS shocking how much sugar lurks in so many innocent-sounding foods. I'm very wary of anything marked 'Low Fat' because they always seem to contain more sugar than the full fat versions. However the app sounds brilliant and takes the guesswork out of no-sugar shopping. Thanks, Sum1.

I remember SILs mum showing us a book last Christmas, which showed how much hidden sugar was in foods. We all looked at it and were fascinated, and shocked.

I find that low fat foods can be sweet Daisy. I also do not understand how you can have a fat free yogurt, I don't feed little ones now but I will look for the ap. Sum.

Was really shocked to find some yogurts and drinks contain 6 teaspoons of sugar. Will definitely download the app. Shudder when I think how many times I gave my children yogurt instead of a pudding! Govt needs to insist on proper labelling so people can make an informed choice!
