I bought a bottle of Anjou Blanc 2013 from Sainsburys the other day and thought I would have a glass last night (I felt half dead from staying up all night on Thursday so nothing to lose) and it was totally vile. The number on the back was 4 which falls into the sweet range. It was like the bitterest lemons with a pungent nauseating aftertaste. I will be taking it back today!! However, the reason for mentioning this is that I wonder if anyone can recommend a nice sweet white which does not cost an arm and a leg please. I know it is more fashionable to drink dry white these days but I just don't like it. Suggestions please.

Fashion is unimportant - it's what we like that matters I seem to remember Liebfraumilch was sweet and nice. Vina Sol, a Spanish wine is lovely but I'm not sure it would be classed as sweet, more medium maybe.

Sainsburys will certainly refund you for that wine BL.

The only wine I like has to have bubbles,I cannot drink flat wine it gives me a headache. I'm not a great wine buff,I like what I like.

If you like a sweet wine then look for Sauternes. And be prepared to pay a bit more than usual. Alternatively a Muscat is very good with a lovely perfumed flowery taste.

Just checked the back of my bottle of Sainsbury's vino and 4 is at the dry end of the scale. I'd think you'd be better to get something above 5 or 6 if you prefer something sweeter Lizzy. Mine is a 2 and I'm enjoying it very much!

I agree with MS - a sauternes. And it it worth paying a little more. I don't know about Muscat so can't comment. I'm mainly a red wine fan - merlot, shiraz from choice.

Thanks for all the interesting advice. Like Daisy red would be my wine of choice and always was but cardiologist said no red wine as it can make my heart arrhythmia worse. It is a stimulant in the same way that caffeinated coffee is. So I switched to white (not too often as advised again) I too love the fizzy stuff but as I only drink a couple of glasses a week and DH doesn't drink alcohol at all it just goes flat and stale. I know I can get tiny bottles of fizzy stuff but they are proportionately ridiculously expensive. I do now add a little fizzy water to my wine making a spritzer. I will try Sauternes and perhaps a German sweet as well. I heard that Aldi do a nice German sweet my local Aldi do not stock German wines!!!

I like white wine spritzers too BL. I make them with soda water. It means I can have glass of wine if I am driving, as it's only half a glass really!

I love Rose wine, you get the best of both worlds there. Got very fed up with inferior supermarket wines recently, so went to Majestic and bought two cases, one red mixture for OH, and one rose mixture for me. SO much better, so much tastier, much more profoundly satisfying than the ***p from the other places! Yes, I paid at least £1 a bottle more, but got the quality. I also would used soda to make a rose sprizter for BBQ's!

Plant I didn't know that soda water also came in cans. I have seen the big bottles in Waitrose but cans would be better as DH would use up the rest.
Elisi I only have two glasses maximum each week and this mixed with water so a case would last forever. I did check the "nicer" wines in Waitrose but sadly no sweet whites other than dessert wine which I have found are a bit too sweet for me. Never satisfied
