    Store cupboard staples

I have just been sorting my store cupboard staples out ,
To be honest I don't need anything for several weeks , I always have a supply of tins in but we don't use tins a lot ,
I have a few tins of beans , peas , tomatoes , potatoes ( we never use ) but I keep them for emergency's kidney beans etc so we not going to starve , soups both tinned and cuppa soup ,
    All the usual basics ,
Then I sorted the fridge , plenty of Jams and Marmalade plus pickles , mint sauce apple sauce etc no shortage there ,

Next the freezer I have everything to last us weeks in there too , plus bits I didn't realise we had in like cooked chicken and cooked gammon I had vacuum packed to use as a chicken and ham pie filling ,
I bought a pk of 12 pork sausages last week in Tesco only to find today 3 pks of different sausage already in

I have made a list of what we have and stuck it to back of larder cupboard door , so I know not to buy certain items .

I even found some Pig cheeks I bought for storm I forgot I had , he can have them tomorrow I have taken them out to defrost ,

We also have ready meals B has cooked extra when been cooking like Meat loaf , Currys etc ,

So I think we are well set up for months if we get grounded at least it will make us use stuff up in the freezer .

I really only need to shop for perishables ,

Its amazing what you find when you look , always something to make a meal out of .

Oma, you will be okay for months with all that food! I only have a very small freezer in the fridge, I always think the shops are 2 minutes away if I do need anything. I do have a good store cupboard though, I am an awful woman for offers!!!! Got plenty of tins of kidney beans etc, not keen on veg out of a tin or jar, then I have just been to a shop in the village and got some packets of spicy soup etc etc. (On offer)

I have enough milk to last a while, I got a lot in stock as I got some kefir from a neighbour a few weeks ago, I do like it, so, every other day I sieve it etc and start again.

Good idea to make a list Oma, I shall copy that one. Interested in your Kefir Lizzie, I do like it and it is very good for the gut.

Neighbour bought the grains? at a health shop and brought me some she had made, I like sour things so no bother there, it is so easy to make, just drain it, granules (they do multiply) in a lidded jar with a pint of milk, 2 days later start again, I am usually fed up with it all after a day or two but I am sticking to this.

I used to do something similar with yogurt making when the children were young, my DD has a yogurt maker

I went and attacked both of my freezers one is a smaller chest freezer and the other is standard fridge size so I'm OK for ready meals which have been batch cooked my eldest son is keeping me supplied with fresh veg when he comes off night shift at Sainsburys he leaves it in the bin store outside the front door at 6.30am on his way home,he is a good boy.I noticed yesterday afternoon people where stocking up on dog & cat food in Morrisons and large boxes of washing powder there was no tissues or toilet rolls to be seen but plenty in our local shops.I have enough though and wouldn't think of over buying in a panic as some where.

We went to B&M this afternoon I needed some pan scrubbers , plenty of loo rolls tissues etc plenty of cleaning product but no sanitizer , one family had a trolley packed with huge multi flavour bags of crisps , is there a shortage of crisps ? we were behind them at checkout , they also had 24 tins of Hot dogs , I said to B surely they must be having some sort of party

We then popped over the road to Iceland food warehouse I wanted some Pitta bread no one seemed to have any today , they had no bottled water at all ,
I like bottled water but wouldn't stock pile , you can filter tap water ,use that as far as I know water isn't rationed either .

My niece cant get hold of Pull ups for her little boy where she lives and she said there was a woman crying in Sainsbury's she had twins and couldn't get nappies , Its pure madness .

Oma, your cupboards sound like mine. I haven't been panic buying.
It's normal for me to have plenty in the cupboards.
Freezers are full of meat and batch cooked pies and various things i have made.
Loads of frozen veg,but i always use these. Plenty of bread in both freezers.
When we do our supermarket shop,i always buy 4 4pint bottles of milk.
In fact, milk is probably the only thing i would have to replace. oh and chocolate.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Nanto I did buy some dried milk just in case I couldn't get out but that's only thing out of the usual for me to buy . Like you a good stocked larder and freezer are normal for us

Nanto - don't forget the chocolate! OH treated himself to two bars of Sainsbury's own brand dark fruit and nut today - because they were on offer, and it's his favourite!

Oma - oh, that poor mum of twins. She must be really worried, and most of today's mums aren't geared up for towelling nappies like we used on our babies.

We went early to Sainsbury's - to avoid the crowds, we thought! I commented to OH that it was just like Christmas Eve, without the reindeer head dresses! I had brought myself a much-needed new bra a couple of weeks ago and it's so comfortable I decided to get another one. That aisle was totally deserted - I could have tried the bra on without embarrassment!!! There was plenty of liquid and bar soap, but no sanitiser. I watched one man, about my age, so probably living in a one or two-person household take all the 5 bottles of hand wash he was allowed. It'll last them till Christmas at least! People are crazy. There were loads of toilet rolls - they didn't even put them on the shelves - just let the stack of them at the end of an aisle. People were buying loads of tinned vegetables, beans, soups, etc. I don't think some of them were even looking at the labels to see what might be lurking in the tin. "Look, there's a tin, that must be good. Let's have lots of them."

DIL1 was quite cross with us for going shopping at all! I promised her we'd be very careful! I seem to remember that was a time when our generation were always telling her generation to be careful! LOL

Afterwards I went into the nearby garden centre which was fairly quiet, to get birthday cards. Lots of birthdays coming up in April and May so I did buy most of the ones I needed. I don't think that counts as stockpiling????

                          I must check our cupboards.
Mum has lots of tins and as I have said elsewhere, lives on virtually nothing anyway

The only thing I can't get is bread flour. I have yeast, powder milk etc but no-where has strong flour. I have a bread maker & usually alternate home made with shop bought bread. OH said there was no bread left either in the supermarket this afternoon. Never mind if worse comes to the worst I need to loose a few stone.😉

I really feel for the poor mum. If she was on a mummy's online group I'm sure they'd help her out.

Nana - if necessary, you can make Irish soda bread using SR wholemeal flour.

I've just looked up a recipe but I'm sure I've used one recipe that didn't use buttermilk - I can't remember ever buying buttermilk! But it's a nice bread.
