    A cooking saga

The mention of left-overs on another thread rang true with me this past week but not in a particularly good way.

I needed a few mushrooms for a recipe but I thought I would buy the more economical family pack.I changed my mind about what I was going to cook another day using the rest of them. so was left with mushrooms surplus to requirements. I don’t like them on toast so decided to make a quiche. Not wanting to bother making pastry I used a pack of ready made. The amount was too much for the quiche and as it had already been frozen I thought I could use it up by making a blind flan case. After freezing the case for a while I discovered I had quite a few eggs that were nearing their date so I decided to make an egg custard tart. All went well until I filled the pastry case which promptly leaked the egg custard mixture all over the baking tray! I resorted to tipping the custard in to a dish and cooking it separately.

If only I had bought the right amount of mushrooms in the first place!

Been there Clover, very frustrating for you. Was the egg custard nice?

Oh the joys of economising it never works well for me,last week I put some cooked veg in a container to cool and placed in the shed with the intention of adding to soup the following day I completly forgot about it and came across it 3 days later so it had to be binned I just hate throwing away good food.

Yes Plant, surprisingly enough the egg custard was much better than I expected it to be.

I think our generation was brought up not to waste food. I can’t bear to bin anything. I even freeze leftover veg. to use later in a bubble and squeak or corned beef hash.

Oh dear! One thing leads to another sometimes, doesn't it?

😆😆Clover. Sounds like my kitchen! I cannot bear waste either and OH is worse! If he was left on his own I think he may have gut problems! It is usually mushrooms that end up in the compost, I forget to use them. Now here’s an instance of using everything. I cooked the last beetroots in the slow cooker yesterday, then dyed an old cotton sheet in the resultant liquid. The result is a very delicate shade of peachy pink. This will be a cross over pinny by tomorrow. 😁

Yesterday we cooked Ham Hock , there was loads left so lunch time we had it cold in sandwiches and the rest the dog had a lovely lunch with it ,
Tonight we had Roast chicken dinner , im not a fan of dark meat but will eat it in a curry so what is left has gone in the freezer ( I can say that now I have a new freezer )

Usually the dog would get that too but we wont have him again till Friday so wont keep .

With meat we do try to get a couple of meals out of it .

Im a bit funny with mushrooms I don't like them hanging around too long ,
Our neighbours mam brought us a huge tray of green house tomatoes last week , I had already bought some so we made hers into sauce to add to stuff and froze them all in usable portions
Im not fat just 6ft too small

We will be enjoying plum tomatoes on toast most of next week after I bought a bag full from the farmers market and then John's friend kindly left me a bag on the porch which he had picked from his green house.

Clover - that story sounds so familiar. It happens in our house all the time.

I often find I do a supermarket shop and then something happens so we're out and I don't need to make as many meals as I thought. We then start the pantomime of buying something to use up something else, and then there's probably a bit of the extra items I've bought are left over, so I buy something to make a meal out of them, and so it goes on!

                      I hate waste as well.
