My parents bought new a build detached bungalow in a small cul-de-sac three miles from York in 1957.
I was three years old so have no memory of the homes we lived in prior t0 that.
It was a two bed bungalow and in 1968 they had a dormer extension with two bedrooms up there, the staircase being in what was the second bedroom.
Having never moved in all these years there was never any need to throw things out. Mum likes to keep things anyway. We have lost count of how many old hoovers we found in the loft and garage whilst clearing things out!
Mum never wanted to leave her home, and managed to stay there until she was 91 and wasn't safe to be on her own any more. She lived alone there for the last 11 years or so.
She is now in a care home, being looked after, and has been there for the last year. Her savings are almost gone now in paying for her care all that time, plus bills at her house.
The house had to be put on the market in order to continue to pay for my mum's care.
There was SO much work to do in order to get it ready. It will be sold as needing updating, so we are not aiming for pristine condition by any means. We do want it emptied and in tidy condition though.
Family have helped a bit, but to be be honest 80% has been OH and me. More her than me.
Without her I could never have done this. I would have had to be pay lot of money for a lot of help. She has endless energy, strength and enthusiasm (which is why people forget she has incurable cancer) I got downhearted and overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all, but she never did.
We are now almost ready to have it go on the market. Hours and hours of sorting, cleaning, taking things to the tip or charity or be sold are almost done. On Tuesday the council will collect the ten bulky items SIL3 helped us into the garage with. The next day we will move anything remaining in the house into the garage so the house will be empty. DDs 1 and 2 are going on Monday to take some boxes for charity and DD3 is meeting someone who wants to buy the fridge freezer tomorrow.
On Thursday the estate agent and photographer will go, then it will be on the market. I hope it sells quickly and we get an acceptable price.
The house has many memories for me, and to sell it is hard. We have no alternative though, and the house needs to be a home again.
