Is genealogy your hobby? Have you found a lot of information about your family tree? Or are you searching for it? Do you have a great deal of info on one side of your family but keep running into brick walls when you try to learn more about the other? How you discovered it, what you've gone through to get the data and anecdotes that you've collected, what you'd like to know and any tips you can give about the best ways to research one's roots.

Well done, Oma. The records for so long ago must be really hard to find and understand.
It's one of those hobbies I work on for a while then other things get in the way and I put it to one side. The theory was that it would be a winter hobby when the cold wet days and long dark nights kept me indoors, and I couldn't get out with my camera.
I've traced my father's side of the family back to 1841, and my mother's side only to the late 1800s. I had virtually no information to start with, especially on my mother's side. I only knew her maiden name and her step-father's surname. Not much to go on and no family to ask, so in fact just finding her parents (my grandparents) in the records took ages.
I've done it all online - there's no way I would have been able to keep travelling to records offices and archives, and my absolute luxury is a subscription to Findmypast, which is brilliant. There's so much more I want to do and I'd like to make the information I have into some form of record that might be of interest to our grandchildren, rather than a 'dry' family tree with names and dates. One day!!!

I have been researching my family trees for about 10 years now, fascinating hobby. I've done a lot online but have visited different record offices/libraries etc. because sometimes there are errors in the online information. I have discovered so much that I didn't know and about 3 years ago met up with my father's cousin and her family. She was 85 years old and remembered my parents getting engaged! Unfortunately her eyesight was very poor so she couldn't help me identify people in some if the old photos I had but it was lovely to talk to her. I am in the process of writing it all up properly because, although it's all in the computer, if it should get lost I would be devastated and no-one else could understand my notes . I subscribe to Ancestry and find that site really useful and I also go to a Family history group meeting once a month.....run by Ragdoll on here . I could go on for ever, it's fascinating."Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." - Dr Seuss
