    Will it or won't it?

    .... be a dry summer?

For the last 3 winters our allotment has been flooded throughout the winter and very wet during the summers. Now, after a much drier winter, the ground is dry enough to plant young plants and sow seeds. Today I put in 3 rows of onion sets and watered them in well.

Now, the dilemma is, do I continue to water new plants for a couple of weeks after planting, or conserve our water for later in the summer when certain crops need the water to mature!

Ladies, please can I have your best guess on whether it will be a dry or wet summer? I promise not to moan if your prediction is wrong!

No prediction Daisy, but how about a watering and a good mulch of anything you have. At least they will keep damp but will they rot? Ha! That is the question.

Good thought, GM, but last year I lost all my onion sets because they rotted in the ground, it's more needing to water them while they establish. We've got 2 water butts full to the top, so it's a matter of rationing it to best advantage. Help! I need a crystal ball. Ironically the compost heap that's ready to use is quite dry because it's under trees.

That is how it is with veg. Gardening Daisy. Either there is too much rain or too little and caterpillar 's eat the greens, black fly on the runner beans, carrot fly. I watched my husband battle with elements and creatures for years. Still the veg is good when you achieve it. Good luck, no prediction I'm afraid

I'm just a greenhouse veggie grower Daisy, I gave up battling the elements and creatures about 10 years ago! I thought it was a wet and fairly overcast summer last year, but they say after a dry winter you can have a long hot summer. But then again, THEY whoever they are, say a lot of things they can't actually foretell!

Saw in the paper today that we are due a three month heatwave so I would guess that it will be cool wet summer if the past newspaper stories are anything to go by. Supposedly the temperatures will be in the 80s within a few weeks!
