Does your OH have a hobby?

The various hobbies our OH's have or had came up on another thread.
I thought it may be useful to talk about them here as well.

My OH is always busy, unless watching TV sport, then she can become inactive for hours!

She enjoys the garden and DIY and is very clever at DIY and has fixed so many things for us and others.
She played golf at weekends occasionally when she still worked. Once she retired she joined the local golf club, and it has been a great success. Not only is she really good (her handicap keeps dropping) she has a great social life there, and some lovely new friends. As the rest of her friends still work, having this group of retired but active friends has been a real bonus.

My OH is a very talented DIY-er. He can turn his hand to most things apart from electrical, which he wisely leaves to an expert. His grandfather was a painter and decorator and OH often used to stay with them when he was a child, and Taid taught him everything from paper hanging (even ceilings) to sign writing! He has fitted whole kitchens, built a conservatory in one house, and totally renovated a house for my cousin. His talents end the minute he steps outdoors though, and he will only do gardening under pain of no dinner, and then I have to keep an eye on him! LOL

Since he retired he's collected a huge quantity of original metal Meccano - goodness knows what he's going to do with it - enjoys trading bits and pieces on an auction site, and of course has his wood turning. He has a large shed in the garden, with two big lathes, a band saw, a sharpening gadget, and all sorts of other stuff. He insulated the shed before he started, and reinforced the floor when he got the biggest lathe, he's put in filtration systems to take particles of wood out of the air. He's also got a filtering safety mask, as some woods are toxic. He's gradually winding down the various charity audits that he did, but he's still got plenty to keep him busy. The frustrating thing is he's not very keen to help with day-to-day chores around the house, although he often does the supermarket shop. Still better that than being bored, and as I mentioned elsewhere, we have both made good friends through his wood turning activities.

DH is brilliant at DIY and also loves carpentry, anything to do with wood. He has fitted kitchens, bathrooms, does all the decorating and really has a go at anything. That is why he gets frustrated now that he can’t do so much. He also has his video camera club, plays bowls and enjoys walking. He’s also good with cars and has even replaced engines....not for many years though. It’s heavy work. At the moment he keeps busy editing films, messing about on the computer and is looking forward to going back to his bowls club. However, he’s still going up ladders to fix things, I’ll never be able to stop him. Oh, and he likes model making, there is a lovely little sailing boat almost finished upstairs...I must remind him about that, it’s looking really good so far. So he does keep fairly busy although he has slowed down over the last few months.

Like Daisy’s DH though, he doesn’t ‘see’ the mundane day to day jobs that need doing, but apart from that he’s very handy to have around the house 😃

Same with B he is very handy , can turn his hand to almost anything , loves his woodwork projects and did have a Lathe till he took ill and we sold it , it was a shame it was just sitting in the shed doing nothing , He has so many large tools like Band saws, Router's , Sanders , I lose count .
In the past he's fitted kitchens, bathrooms , tiled floors and walls , fitted new sockets etc ,
The past few years he's had to slow down and it's been frustrating when we have had to get Martin in or our SIL to do stuff but he's getting back in there 😊
He loves to Cook and Bake and make bread , he also loves to potter on his computer so when he has the energy he keeps busy ,

Another hubby here that as always been into DIY.
Over the years hes refitted the bathroom twice.
He installed the kitchen himself, and he built the conservatory.
Walls and floors have been tiled, and he can wallpaper.
Doorways have been bricked up,walls knocked down.
Loves working with wood, always making things for in the garden.

Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Oma I think your man and mine must be twins. Woodwork and baking - but not enough DIY these days. He’s recently made a lovely garden bench and keeps us and the neighbours supplied with bread including B’s rye recipe.

Oh is he still using that Sum 1 well done him
B has his own Sour dough culture going in the fridge , he feeds it every week , he will say "im going to feed the monster" as every time he does it doubles in size before settling again
Makes wonderful bread the smell in the kitchen is lovely .

He made me some lovely Hexagon Planters for the garden this year , and a lovely unusual trinket box ,
Its the first time in a couple of years hes felt strong enough to do something ,

I do any wall papering he's great with a paint brush but has no patience with paper ,
I learned from the age of 13 to wall paper and I can paper ceilings too ,
B just loses it if it doesn't go up straight first time , its so funny to see him get angry as he's not the type so we fall about laughing when he does
Im not fat just 6ft too small

I think all of us with 'handy' and talented OHs are very lucky. We've got friends where neither of the couple can do anything practical or useful and have to pay to have even the smallest job done. Oma - before OH and I were married I used to do all the decorating, painting the outside, repairs, mending fuses etc. But I'm quite happy for OH to do them instead!

I think that my OH has lost the inclination to do much. He cooks meals & mows the lawns & golfs with his usual three mates. One good move is that he's applied to be a volunteer at the YWP (Yorkshire Wildlife Park). Trouble was he passed me his mobile so I could fill in the application form. 🤞he gets it.

Daisy, you’re so right. I grew up with a father who was also extremely hand, did everything, in fact he had his own painting and decorating business and was an electrician as well. So when I met DH I just naturally assumed that every man did the same, luckily he did. I was always surprised when I met other young Mums whose husbands could do nothing practical and they either had to do and pay someone else. Our DS is pretty handy too but not so much SIL, he tries but he is soooo sloooowww! DD has to wait ages before anything gets finished! He won’t let anyone help as he takes that as a personal slur that he cant do it! Consequently there’s a lot needs doing in their house.
