    Age is but a number

This saying came to mind today when we were out shopping ,
A lady was standing in the middle of the aisles looking around, She was I would say 70ish

As I passed she said ," why do men just disappear when your shopping ?"
I said has your husband wandered off ?, no she said its my SIL , he brings me shopping as he said I'm too old to come myself and then goes off on his own , it drives me mad .

I said well you don't look to old to come shopping yourself !!!
She then said I'm 98 and he thinks I'm in my dotage

We were shocked and I mean shocked , a very smart straight backed woman who honestly looked 30 years younger , Her SIL finally appeared and he looked older than her
I thought she had said it wrong so I said you cant be 98 and her SIL said yes she is , shes 99 in November

Some people are just naturally young at heart body and sole

Oma, I love that. Good for her!

I was in a local card shop just before Christmas and the lady just ahead of me was incredibly smartly dressed, nicely made up and had a sort of gamin hair style. She could have been anywhere between early 60s and late 80s. She was carrying quite a lot of shopping and she dropped one of her bags. I bent down to pick it up for her so she didn't drop even more things, and she turned round to say 'thank you'. She went on to say she sometimes gets a bit dizzy bending down like that, but she said at 105 I suppose I can expect a few little aches and pains!!! Then she leaned forward towards me and whispered "I'm only 104, but my birthday's next week!"

Last term I was chatting about birthdays with a couple of the boys from my reading group and said OH had just had a birthday. "How old was he ?" asked R. So I said 70 and R replied that 70 was REALLY old! He than asked what age I was. So I told him you that you never ask a lady her age, but they could have guess. After some discussion they decided I was about 49!! I said that was near enough and they went back happily to the task in hand! Meanwhile, I felt rather pleased to say the least!
Another one of my previous group wanted to know why she didn't come to me for reading, so I told her that now she was in a different class, another person took the readers there. "Yes, I know" she said......."and he's an OLD man!"
I don't think there's a great deal of difference in our ages.
That's what I miss about teaching, the little comments that you get from children.

It is interesting though how some people really make an effort to be clean and smart whatever their age and some just let themselves go. My Granny, in her 90s and after having both hips replaced, was most miffed that she couldn't get up a stepladder to change her curtains! Hope I end up like her!
Believe you can and you're halfway there.

WG my MIL is like that she's 84 and very smart and active , still gets up on a stool to paint walls and ceilings , it frightens the life out of us , she wont use a ladder, only thing she will accept help with is cutting the grass and changing the bed

Crikey, i hope i'm like some of those people at that age, thats if i get to that age.

Now my in laws are a different kettle of fish. Dad retired at 58 and at 60 he was an old man, if you know what i mean.
Mam is 93 now,but i would say she has been an old woman since her late 70's.

I can remember a few years ago, eldest son called in one day,and he had a workmate with him.
Next day,his pal asked him how old we were, son told him we were in our 60's, and said they are young 60's, not old 60's.

When my gran was my age, and i'll be 67 next week, she was like an old woman.
Now i don't feel any older than when i was 50.

On one of our holidays last year, there was 8 of us, and we were the oldest 2.
One of the group said i can't believe you 2 are the oldest and you get about like 50 year olds.

A lot of people can't believe hubby is 70 in 3 months time. I say it's because he's been well looked after.

Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Wee Granny - how sweet the children are, but I'm sure they are very good judges of how old you look!!! I'm sure you will not only be like your Granny, you will still be climbing ladders and hanging curtains.

Oma - you have to admire your MIL's get up and go even though she does frighten you to death!

Nanto - I agree some people seem old before their time. I know when we were 20 we probably all thought 60 was ancient, but we were so wrong! But expectations and lifestyles change. I only ever remember my grandmother wearing black. She was a tiny old lady and never looked any different. She was always sitting in a chair by the fire.

Good grief Oma, good for her!
Let's hope we are all that that lady at her age

                    104 Daisy!!

My mum used to say things like Age is only a number, and refused to have any birthday cards with 70 on them - she told us all beforehand that she didn't want any!!
In the last few years I think she has aged a lot in body and attitude. She hardly does anything at all. She is 89, but compared to these people she seems older.

Gem - I know for some people, ageing is due to poor health. I think we're very lucky if we stay in reasonable health well into old age, but if your health is ok-ish I think it's an attitude of mind, and some people just kind of give up. I'm not saying that' you mum has given up, but perhaps she feels she can't cope so well with modern life.

Some lovely stories,, I am 69 shortly, so can say I will be 70 next year up to now I’ve been fine about my age didn’t feel i looked it nor felt it , but wonder if reaching that magical number with an zero on the end will psychologically change things in my head, my OH is 72 this year , wished he didn’t smoke is blessed cigars but he doesn’t drink at all and so hopefully we will carry on enjoying life, I’m sure there are a few on here who will put me right lol

Qwerty - I'm sure you will be just the same lively, glamorous lady this time next year. I promise you 70 is quite young! I have found myself saying things like 'she's only 82' since I was 70!

                          Your perception of age changes!

Qwerty, you are very youthful and not at all like anyone's idea of a 70 year old!! As Daisy says, 70 isn't old these days 😊
