Anyone here with experience of corrective eye surgery for small children?

Little E has a date for his surgery to correct the squint in both eyes.
It is this month. We are all slightly freaking out to use DD3s words!
His parents think it's the right thing to have it done, and I agree. I just wish it didn't have to be done!!
I have said we all have to be brave for him, because I think he will be.
We have ordered him a book about going in for surgery aimed at his age group. He is three.

I just wondered if anyone had experienced this in the family?

Gem, any surgery on small children is frightening for the rest of the family, and I can understand your concern, even though it's the right thing to do. I think hospitals are amazing these days at reassuring children (and adults) and making sure they are comfortable with each stage of any surgery, and he should be home the same day. I would expect he'll need drops in his eyes afterwards, and perhaps that is something he will need to be prepared for. I'm sure the doctor will have good advice on how to approach drops.

One of our nieces had corrective surgery in one eye when she was quite small, but she is in her 50s now, so like Nanto's SIL a long time ago. She was absolutely fine and had excellent eyesight until age-related myopia developed in her late 40s.

My GD2 had a squint in one eye, but she is also long-sighted and they decided not to operate. The squint was corrected with glasses and a patch when she was about 4. She still wears glasses for her long-sightedness, and will be able to wear contact lenses when she's old if she wants to. She likes wearing her glasses though.

My friends grandson who is 4 had this done about 2 months ago
They were all so worried but he took it in his stride and although they were distressed he went in and came around a little groggy and a few tears but as soon as he was awake he was fine.

Children cope with these things far better than adults ,
Hopefully as he has a book about it and he is a very bright boy he will sail through it,
The drops might be a challenge even adults don't like them 😁
Im not fat just 6ft too small

You know he will be fine but nobody likes their children to have to undergo surgery.
