Mussels!

I'm not sure if my OH had just had a reaction to a bad mussel, or an allergic reaction.

She adores mussels and most seafood and if mussels are on the menu she will order them as either a starter or main course.

On Thursday she ate out with the golf team. At a really good French restaurant in town which we have visited lots .
She had mussels as a starter.

She went in and out by bus
She came back ( thank goodness as it turned out) with another lady who lives in our village. She felt a little hot and unwell waiting for the bus.
She was on the bus when the next thing she was aware of was her friend offering her a hankie and telling her she had been sick. The front of her leather coat was covered in vomit and it was on the floor. Her friend said she passed out. OH had no idea she had been sick, or passed out.

She was mortified, embarrassed and baffled.
I was just glad she wasn't driving herself home, or alone on the bus. The driver wasn't best pleased as you can imagine.
OH, her friend and I all presume the mussels were the culprit.

She wasn't sick again but her tummy was a bit delicate, and she just feels a bit achy and almost fluey.

I wouldn't have a problem avoiding mussels as I would never eat them, but OH will be sorry if she has to avoid them I'm sure.

Oh Gem, what a horrible thing to happen to OH, but thank goodness she wasn't on her own as it seems she had no idea she'd passed out. Is that a 'normal' response to an allergic reaction to a food I wonder. I do hope it was just one bad mussel in the dish and she can still enjoy them.

Gem, hope S feels better soon.

First cruise we went on was in the Carribean. A couple of friends deided to join us.
The friend had mussels on the first night. During the night he became ill.
He was ill all week,spoilt the holiday for him and his wife.
Holiday was nearly over,when he started to feel a bit better.

It sounds like an allergic reaction , I have had anaphylactic shock and part of the symptoms is passing out vomiting very hot ,
Swelling itching shortness of breath and hives.

I think if it was food poisoning she would have frequented the loo a lot .
It may be worth having an allergy test just to be on the safe side although I doubt she will be trying Mussels again ,
Poor S not nice and it’s just as well she wasn’t alone or at the wheel.

Hope S is feeling better now Gem. Lucky she was with someone but not a very nice thing to happen to her.
I would think mussels are off the menu now! They’re something I can’t/won’t eat!

What a horrible thing to happen and so embarrassing. I would have thought an allergic reaction would have occurred soon after eating the offending item not a while later. I hope S soon feels much better soon.

I wonder why you can have been eating something for years with no problems and then suddenly become allergic to it. I wouldn't have thought S had been eating mussels every week or even every month.

Gem I was allergic to strawberries from my teenage years and later in Australia to mangoes! Swollen face, body rash etc and it was made even worse by the fact that I was allergic to penicillin which I was given when the strawberry allergy started! However, now I'm an old lady, I can eat both without any problems!

Wee Granny, you must have been very poorly getting a double whammy of allergic reaction from strawberries and penicillin.

My OH developed an allergy to mushrooms years ago which started with a well-filled mushroom omelette. He avoided them for a long time, but now seems to be ok with small quantities.
