Eye conditions (cataracts, macular degeneration etc)

I have noticed a lot of discussion on cataracts on Chat, so thought a thread may be useful for that and other eye conditions.

Good idea, Gem. I know several of us have had cataract surgery and know people with Age-related Macular Degeneration.

I had cataract operations to both my eyes within a few months of each other. I was in my my early 50s and was told I was young for this surgery - although I know that even children and babies can develop them.
I had to have the after-cataract laser treatment on both eyes later to remove the cells which can accumulate at the back of the eye. A quick painless and instant process.

My mum had Macular Degeneration, the kind which can't be treated. Toward the end of her life she was virtually blind
My auntie has both kinds, the treatable and the untreatable one, in each eye.
Fortunately the 'bad' (cant be treated) kind isn't too advanced and the other is successfully treated by eye injections at the hospital every few weeks to keep it stable.

With MD on both sides of the family I fear developing this condition. The optician keeps a check on this and no sign so far.
Smoking makes MD worse so that may why my mum's was so much worse than auntie's.

Gem, the lady I go to the pool with has injections in her eyes, she goes to a special eye clinic in Delft. My eldest brother has MD and is almost blind, poor man.

I have cataracts in both eyes, but they're at a very early stage according to the optometrist! OH had them 'done' in both eyes and was happy with the result.

I was told i had the start of a cataract last time i had my eyes tested.
Have heard a lot about Macular Degeneration, but i don't know anyone who has it.

My mother had two cornea grafts to try to restore her sight , it worked slightly but it wasn’t great , mind you this was back in the early 70s things have progressed dramatically since then.
