    telogen effluvium.

Has anyone heard of telogen effluvium?
I hadn't until I started looking into causes for my thinning hair.
I have always had thick hair, sometimes too thick I felt!

A couple of weeks or so ago I realised that I was clearing hairs from my hairbrush and comb far more often than was usual. With long hair which is darkish, you notice them a lot.
Then OH commented that she had cleared up a lot of loose hair from the bedroom carpet around the spot I usually do my hair.

This then made me take more notice and I realised that my hair dried much more quickly now, and my bun is smaller when I put my hair up.
My hair, wet or dry just doesn't feel like my hair any more, as it feels so much thinner.

As we all know, gone are the days when it is easy to just make a Drs appointment to check things out.

I did some searching and I am pretty sure that this condition is the cause.

It comes generally 2 to 4 months after an illness, shock or having a baby. Strange diets can cause it too,

I was very ill for a few weeks in the summer as you may remember. I ate almost nothing for a month, so I think this is my bodies response to all that.
I have also lost a tooth and had dry socket since then, so I suppose I should expect some consequences to all those things.

It should stop shedding in time and eventually thicken up again, although not necessarily to the the previous thickness.
My poor mum has had very fine fair her whole life, but mine has been thick like my dad's, so this is very unusual.

Gem, my hair is thinner at the moment, I blame covid and losing weight, I have a navy doormat, I am forever getting the grey hairs off it.

Yes I’ve gone from having thick hair to actual bald spots ,

MyDr said as we grow older and any illness can cause Male patented baldness ,

I have been on Iron tablets for a few month and it is thickening but Im still having to be careful how I style it and I’m using
Root spray on the worst parts to hide my scalp .

I did say not so long ago if it got any worse I would even consider a wig .
Im hopping the iron tablets help but I did have long covid too so it’s all contributed I think .

I admit I’m very conscious when I’m out incase the wind blows my hair and people can see the bald spots .

Gem, it's hardly surprising that you would have some after-effects from when you were so ill in the summer. It took you a long time to start feeling like your old self, so your whole system must have been under stress, fighting to recover. As a matter of interest are your nails weaker as well?

I hope good diet will help it to thicken up again. Our hair does get thinner after the menopause anyway but I hope you get back to what it was like before your illness.

Oma, it's good to hear your hair is getting a bit thicker again.

                  I never have Lizzie, no.

That this has happened so suddenly and after the illness does tie in with this condition I mentioned though.

Oma, I do remember you being very concerned about your hair loss a while ago.

It's not nearly so bad for men is it? We women usually value our hair, and I really have all my life

It became very very thin I have been upset about it ,
I read Iron deficiency can be a cause and as my Iron was so low that may be the cause .plus long covid , that thankfully is getting less now .

It is a little thicker but no where near recovered ,
I read it could take up to 6 month ,
It started on the crown then I noticed how thin it was in my parting and at the back .
As you say Men can get away with it but for us women it’s our crowning glory isnt it xx

Gem, in view f the very wise queries about thyroid and iron deficiencies, would it be a good idea to ask for a blood test and get everything checked out. I would be upset if I suddenly started to lose a lot of my crowning glory. xx

I could ask Daisy, but they are not even doing my usual annual BP check these days, let alone anything 'extra'!

Gem, I know it's hard, but if you have to make a pest of yourself so be it.

                              Time to update this thread!

I can't say my hair has thickened up at all yet but the excess hair loss stopped some time ago . I lost about 50% of my hair in the end. Thank goodness it was even though so no bald or extra thin patches .
It's still a bit dry but hopefully it will improve.

I'm just grateful I didn't lose more hair
