I haven’t been around much lately as a result of a depressing call from the GP after a ‘routine’ blood test. I was expecting a cholesterol result but she told me I have chronic kidney disease! Apparently I have had it for at least 6 years but nobody thought to tell me! No symptoms, no nothing. She didn’t know I’d been having cancer treatment but said she was sorry to hear that. Obviously not read any of the recent correspondence from the hospital. I told her I wanted a scan and she said I wouldn’t get one so no go. I insisted and will have scan in a couple of weeks.
I have just been in hospital for a reversal of the ileostomy and am now home. Oh joy! Sore but happy.
Anyhow, the kidney thing was picked up in hospital and apparently all I need is phosphates for two days. I hope this is the end and not the start of some other disaster. I need so much pampering now…😆

Grauntie, if it is any consolation to you, my mum was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease about 20 years ago. Now 93 and going strong

I hope the phosphates do their trick and you are soon back to normal GM! It does make you wonder if GPs actually read notes or hospital reports though! Or indeed other medics! Every time I take OH for an appointment, I'm told I can't come in with him until I point out he has Alzheimer's and then I'm reluctantly ( quite often) allowed in.

Take care of yourself and make sure OH gives you a bit of pampering!!! xx

Gm pleased you have had your reversal and although sore your home and in the best place to recover ,
I wonder sometimes what Drs do with reports ,
At the moment I am having tests as my white Blood count is very low and I was informed it has been for 3 years ,
No one mentioned it before

Good for you insisting on a scan and at least you know it can be treated with Phosphates , you don't need anymore problems .

Grauntie, I'm so glad you've had your reversal op. I'm sure that must feel like a huge step forwards, and towards normality again. Tuck into lots of bananas and all the other phosphate-rich foods.

It's frightening that doctors don' seem to think it's necessary to tell patients about such things as CKD, and as for not noticing that you have been having cancer treatment - well! That's dreadful.

I hope Mr Grauntie is practising all his nursing and pampering skills to get you back to good health and strength. Take care, and thank you for bringing us up to date - we don't like to pry but Admin were hoping to hear you were on the mend. Big hugs. xxx

Backing up what Gem said - my mum was told when she was in her 80s that she only ever had one kidney, and she'd never had any kidney problems. They thought the second one just never formed or withered away when she was a baby.

So pleased you’ve had the reversal, I’m sure you’ll find life a lot easier now. P was also told he had CKD, we didn’t know until I queried what these initials meant! It didn’t cause him any problems so please try not to worry. Enjoy those bananas, very good for you. Xx

Thanks all. I tried and can’t take the medicine. It makes me feel very sick and has me galloping to the bathroom (not a good plan under the circumstances). I have just read about it and I see it is sometimes used as a laxative!! I ate a tin of sardines for lunch yesterday so that can be my medicine along with a banana in my porridge today.
We are up at silly o’clock because I still feel sick and OH is having a hypo. It’s a good thing he gets a warning as it often happens at night no matter how much he eats.

Grauntie so sorry to hear that you are having more than your share of health issues.
You would expect that at least someone would have noticed that the patient should have been told about the chronic kidney disease. It makes you wonder if anyone actually reads the patient's notes.

Grauntie - I've only just read about your latest problem with the meds. I hope you're feeling better now - that's the last thing you need after your recent reversal op. I wonder why your OH gets random hypos like that. Silly question, but has he talked to his doctor about it?

Re the kidney shock, I spoke to my sister in law the other day. She was told something similar by her GP, but he added that the goal posts for an acceptable reading have recently been changed and this is why people are being told they have disease!
Poor old OH has always been very good at managing his diabetes, with regular check ups. Because our surgery has been all but closed, there have been none. He actually has a face to face appointment this week so hopefully he can sort out the medication again.
