    Well woman clinic

I went to the above a weeks or so ago, I had to wear a blood pressure thingy twice a day for a week, I went to see the practice nurse today and had quite a shock, my blood pressure is way too high and I am now on a tablet once a day to lower it called amlodipine. Some of you may be already on it but I had no idea there was anything wrong but the nurse said that’s why it’s called the silent killer, good heavens, but to top it off I’ve found out all through blood tests I have chronic kidney disease stage 3a there is a stage 3b and stage 4 which is dialysis , now I don’t know if the gap between 3 a and 3 b is quite a long gap I do hope so. I got the healthy talk as you do , exercises healthy eating etc . Just what I need before Xmas, I am due my Botox next Friday, they won’t do it if there is any uti, so asked the doctor a new lady if I could go on a course of antibiotics, she was most indignant and said why go on them if I didn’t have an infection, but I do have them all the time, also she wouldn’t know which one to put me on until she had a culture done. I understand her concerns but this has been me for the last 10 yrs , so did as she asked sure enough the culture results came back positive from the specimen , she rang me this morning to collect a prescription from my chemist, went along to find they didn’t have it in stock, she rang 2 other chemists in the village they didn’t have them, they would try and get it in for me tomorrow, but it’s half day in our village on a Saturday , I need to take the course and finish it before next Friday, doesn’t give me long does it , what is happening to our NHS I have always flown the flag for them but feel so frustrated not about the blood test results it’s good they have found the problems , but no antibiotics the doctor never allowed for that did she 😟

Qwerty, these things are always a shock. I bet a few of us are on medication for high blood pressure, I know I am.

As far as the kidney thing goes. On my mum's notes years ago it said she had chronic kidney disease. She is still here years later at 91 with no problems, so try not to worry. Sometimes their categories and jargon can be really alarming.

Qwerty, i have been on amlodipine for nearly 2 years.
I didn't know my blood pressure was high. Doctor sent me to hospital, and they kept me in overnight.
Now i go to the hypertension clinic every 6 months. Fortunately the tablets are doing their job well.
Sorry to hear about the kidney problems, but as Gem says,it might not come to anything.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Thanks very much ladies glad I put it on the site, I thought the blood pressure thing would be quite common and I have had one check up and my blood pressure has gone to normal but the nurse wants to see me regularly . It seems Gem then that there isn’t much to worry about with CKD I read Oma on google that it’s quite common with diabetics 🤔onwards and upwards 😕

Qwerty - I think we all kind of assume that we're ok if we get up every morning and do the things we do and feel ok. It's good they've found out about your BP and kidney situation now rather than later when it might have been more serious.

I've been on BP tablets for about 20 years - Candesartan cilexetil. My BP has stayed steady on them on the same dose, so they must do something good. All I would say, is if you do get any side effects tell your doctor. The brand I started with gave me a persistent cough but these I'm on now are ok.

Good morning, I think it is all part of the "age" thing, hear it so often! Try not to worry about the high blood pressure, the medicine will help, as Gem says, her mother is 91 with kidney trouble, enjoy Christmas and try not to worry.

It’s good it’s been dealt with Now Qwerty. I’m another who has been on BP meds for years, regular checks ups keep me on the straight and narrow. I’m sure you’ll be fine, but as Daisy says, tell the doc if you have any side effects. I did with the first lot of tablets they put me on but there are so many out there it’s easy to find something that suits you.

My well woman clinic was cancelled and I am supposed to make a new appointment . I will in the new year as I won’t get an appointment till then .
My blood pressure has been up and down but at the moment I haven’t needed any medication but I am almost certain that this time round I be prescribed some.
It’s when I am told to loose weight I worry about. For years I was the same weight but as soon as the menopause hit I put on weight.
I know I am not as active as I was but I am actually eating less than I used to . I haven’t actually put on any more weight in the last 8 years or so . I’m just at a standstill!

Try not not to worry Qwerty as the others have said it is very common. My DS (42) has been on blood pressure tablets for over a year now and he is a builder who is extremely active, he has a gym built in his house and uses it most days . He is a non smoker and he is bang on the weight he should be ! Sometimes you just can’t win whatever you do !

Thanks again ladies I knew if I mentioned it on here you would all be on some meds like me , realise it’s a lot to do with my age and dare I say my weight, I thought I would go through life doing what I wanted with no consequences but I guess it’s come to bite me on the bum, I don’t feel 70 most of the time and in my head I’m 30
Mimi it does go to show though how sometimes age does have nothing to do with it, I am a non smoker thought I was being good but it’s my weight gggrrr
Liz48 I’ve calmed down now lol I’ve been cleaning from top to bottom this week , and lots of social things I can’t be that bad can I 😇

Bet all this came as a surprise love. Good that others can put your mind at ease. Just a thought ~ DD2 was getting tonsilitus quite often & her dr let her have a prescription in as a spare. He trusted her not to use it if she didn't need it. I wondered if your dr could do the same for you? It would ensure you got your antibiotics on time. X

We don't have anything like a well woman clinic at our surgery, I wonder why? Qwerty I'm on BP tablets and have been for years. Not sure now if I need to take them, but better safe than sorry! You'd probably find that if they did another test for your kidney function it'd be normal. I know that's what happens with my liver though my results are never normal as I've got a funny liver.
Nana getting antibiotics here is like getting blood out of a stone! I can't imagine being given extra in case of emergency. Having said that OH picked up my repeat prescription and I've got two lots of medication which I didn't ask for and haven't used for goodness knows how long. Just shows you how repeat prescriptions are checked at our surgery! Not surprised the QCC have put it in special measures.
Believe you can and you're halfway there.

We have a well woman clinic too Gem at our surgery. Nurse led. BP check, bloods taken (not always), pulse rate, dietary advice & general chit chat re any medical worries etc. I believe our surgery are aiming to go paperless prescriptions soon.
