    Eating Out & Manners

Moving on from the topic of "Bottles v Glasses" I have noticed that when we are out and about and fancy something to eat quite a lot of youngsters and young mums and dads are clueless as to how to eat properly,DD and I sat near two mums last week and they where liturally stabbing at their food and pulling the food apart rather than cutting it and eating it correctly it was most off putting watching them, the two children where copying the parents and eating with their fingers most of the time they couldn't manage knives and forks,DD thinks its because a lot of children have packed lunches for school and when they are home eat their meals in front of TVs or Computers not sitting around a table as she insists on and using the correct utensils.

Glam your DD is right , we live in a fast food society , TV dinners ,Take away's Eating meals at different times and all finger food ,
Some children I imagine only ever use fingers or a fork never a knife ,
Having said that I know someone who is 73 who only ever uses a spoon or fingers even when eating out they find it difficult to use a knife and fork , No idea why as I know the family and they all use them no bother .
Im not fat just 6ft too small

Ooooh another of my pet hates. OH said when he was away last week a young lady at a table near him held her knife as if she was about to commit murder then proceeded to rip her food apart. We seem to be forever saying 'elbows' to the GCs too, but at least they ask to leave the table, even if they then disappear under it and proceed to tie shoe laces together or tickle feet.

I agree with you Glamma. We always sit at the table for meals and use knives and forks.

I have to confess to eating rather weirdly!
I am a right hand person who does several things the 'left handed way' including eating. Fork in right hand, knife in left. This means it is difficult to cut some up some foods, especially meat, with the knife in my non dominant hand, so I end up 'tearing' some foods with my fork.

Maybe there's something in the theory about children having packed lunches. I remember at the grammar school teachers would be walking round the room, checking that we were using our cutlery properly. Woe betide you if you so much as used your knife with a pen-grip instead of having the handle in the palm of your hand. I found that really hard at the time! But I can't imagine that happening today.

But I was so glad I had learned those skills when I had a job where I had to take clients out for lunch or dinner!

I'm left handed so I have to use my knife in my right hand as is correct but my right hand is quite weak so sometimes I tear at my food if I don't have a sharp enough knife , oh dear 🍴

I do think blunt knives have a lot to answer for! I hate it when I have to hack at something because the knife isn't sharp enough to go through butter, let alone a serious piece of meat!

Not quite as bad as the family eating at a nearby table last week........Mum changed the child's nappy at the table!! I was too gobsmacked to say anything and anyway they were all a lot bigger than me!
I agree with not using utensils to eat food. Another one that get's me is when a child spears,e.g. a sausage, on their fork and eats it from the end!!! Grrrrr! Manners, what happened to them?

                    Changing nappies at a table?!!!!
My DD won't even change baby T on the grass in the park, when I tell her it's fine to, as long as you are away from anyone eating. She always takes him to the changing area in the toilets.

Wee Granny - that's incredible! I'm surprised the management didn't say something to her - it's not exactly in line with food hygiene practices.

I saw the same thing WeeG. Often after a food shop we eat lunch at their cafe. A mum changed her baby on the table. I couldn't believe it. Maybe it's the next trend along with shopping in their jimjams.
