Ah but Daisy you cannot give a bad reference these days. You can write a carefully worded "X worked for me in the capacity of XXXX for X years" without giving an opinion or you can ignore the reference request. If you gave a bad reference you could end up in court for defamation of character or some other legal problem. So even though the thought is good it is probably best not to offer a reference at all. WIth my ex homeless clients to whom we give two weeks work experience we are told not to write reference letters at all. We issue them with a certificate confirming they worked for us for two weeks as a work experience client,

Zizi - it's crazy that you can't give an honest reference - my suggestion was tongue-in-cheek - but it's also sad that you can't praise your good trainees to the skies, and they only get a certificate. It's a funny old world!
