Our SIL did a sponsored bike ride to raise funds for JDR (junior diabetic research) our GS ..his son...has type 1 diabetes. He raised well over £500 but since then has been pestered every week with phone calls asking him to set up a regular direct debit. He unfortunately had to tell them in no uncertain terms to STOP calling him. Spoilt all his efforts really, such a shame as now he doesn't feel like doing it again.

That is such a shame enfys. He has done his bit and shouldn't be pestered.

I wouldn't feel like doing it again either Enfys. that's the trouble, you do something and then they won't leave you alone.

I used to feel guilty about charities sending Christmas card, pens, coasters etc to me, but now I don't even open the envelopes. It can feel intimidating and makes me very cross. I used to give talks to various groups like WI etc about dating old photographs and if they offered a fee I always donated that to charity, but I refuse to set up anything permanent for the very reason that I know I will get pestered to give more and more.

I suppose the aggressive sales technique works, otherwise the charities wouldn't be able to afford those highly-paid managers, but I'm not prepared to support them in their well-paid jobs. So I only ever give on an ad hoc basis.

A very interesting response indeed. Last year OH was chairman of our local 41 club (ancient Round Tablers) and his chosen charity was Canine Partners. We decided not to send Christmas cards but donate a sum to this charity. We will do the same this year. I like to choose who I donate to.
I have done my apprenticeship in tin rattling and envelope collecting in the past. Never more.😁

When Ben was very small, after his second heart op., we as a family decided on a no Christmas card policy and raised between approx 12 of us £1500 including the results of a raffle and social evening we held. We donated the money to the GOSH charity that runs a house where parents of sick children can stay overnight and which is near the hospital. Son and dil spent many nights there in those days.

We had a speaker at WI last month and she worked for that charity Zizi, she has written a book about her experiences when she was training and the money goes to the Gosh charity that runs the house.

That is interesting Plant. My DIL is now a trustee of the hospital. As a family we have a great affiliation as between them and the Royal Brompton they have prevented us from losing Ben several times. Thank goodness right now there is little danger except for the "episodes".

I will try to find out her name, I remember she was Lady something and the book she has written is called Nurses Don't Run.
