    The Shrinking Cakes

Last week I got a packet of Bakewell Tarts. It's years since I last bought any of these as OH isn't keen, but I really fancied them. I'd always found them to be 'exceedingly good'!

What a shock I had, though. They were less than half the size I remembered. There used to be a thin layer of jam, a good tasty layer of the frangipane centre and coated in a modest layer of icing, plus of course the cherry on top. The layer of jam is now thick and rather gooey, there's a hefty layer of icing, but hardly any of the almond tasting moist centre. In fact, one cake had no centre at all. The cherry is present and appears much larger against the shrunken cake.

So it set me wondering - is Mr K trying to protect me from over-indulgence, or are these pathetic apologies for a delicious cake driven by production costs and profit.

It was my turn to take cake to our cards afternoon on Monday. OH was going shopping so I asked him to bring a cake. He brought Angel slices. 2 for 1 in Tesco. What a disappointment! Just like yours, small and very little actual cake but too much icing. Mr K needs to up his game. 🍰

I suspect like most products now, they try to keep the cost down by reducing the size - and fool no one!

Grauntie, Mr K, and others, are obviously giving us a clear message - "make your own cakes". But sometimes you just don't have the time, energy or inclination to get the mixing bowl out.

Gem, you're right - pretty much everything is smaller, less tasty (unless that's down to my age!) and they often leave a horrible chemical taste in the mouth. I'm not keen on most chocolate/biscuit bars, but I used to like dark Kit Kats. Not any more - they're such a let down.

Same with the country slices and fondant fancies,
Have you seen how small fondant fancies are now😯

I don't really eat sweets as such but I used to like a Star bar,
B brought some in last week , I thought he had bought a pack of mini bars ,
Honestly half the size width and length.
And none of these things are cheap.

We said the same about the angel cakes, they used to be light and fluffy and a good thickness,
I would say they are less than half the thickness now.
Im not fat just 6ft too small

Its what is known now as shrinkflation.
Happening with a lot of products.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Nanto, unfortunately it seems to affect most of the products on the shelves these days.
