    No vegetarian choices for children

This is a bit of a moan about the fish and chip restaurant we will visit tomorrow.

It is a great place, really good fish and chips, nice staff, decent sized portions.

My moan is about the total lack of vegetarian options.
Well, that isn't totally true. The vegetarian options on the general menu are vegetable lasagne, or salad! No veggie options on at all the children's menu.

In this day and age this is so behind the times.

There is a kids menu, which as well as fish and chips, has sausages, fish fingers and chicken nuggets. There are veggie versions of all those on the market, why not offer at least one of them?

My 9 year old GS1 who has a massive appetite, has to have a large portion of chips, portion of baked beans and bread and butter, as there is nothing else he can have.
Maybe I should email them after our visit, and perhaps a veggie option or two may appear by next year?

In todays society when lots of children are vegetarian you would think they could cater at least one option for them ,
I know chips are but children want more than chips ,
There are plenty of plant based alternatives,
Do you think it’s a cost thing ?

Email them see what they say , maybe no one has challenged them on it .

Gem - yes, I agree. Many children who have veggie parents are themselves vegetarians and why shouldn't they be catered for. It's the same with gluten-free and dairy-free options.

I had the opposite problem at our relatives' recent diamond wedding anniversary lunch. It was in a very well-known (and expensive) hotel and both the pre-chosen dessert menus were full of cream (which I can't eat). I was happy not to have a dessert but my kind niece arranged for me and one other guest to have a dairy-free dessert. Unfortunately the hotel jumped to the conclusion that I was both gluten- and dairy-free, which I'm not! I was offered a GF roll, spread instead of butter, no mozzarella cheese on my starter, and several items missing off my main course. The service generally was so poor, I didn't even both asking for the meal I'd ordered. But very disappointing, so I can guess how GS1 will feel tomorrow. Could they serve him a smaller portion of an adult meal instead, although veggie lasagne or salad aren't great options for a youngster.

Daisy, what a shame them deciding you couldn't have any dairy or gluten products!

GS can easily eat an adult portion, so if he wants a veggie lasagne he can have one. He loves pasta, but has never expressed any desire for lasagne but I will point it out on the menu tomorrow. Salad would just be a side dish in his eyes

Gem, I think it's lovely to see children with good appetites, eating well.

Vegetable lasagne sounds good, I suppose they are pre-made individual ones. I agree with you my GD2 is being brought up vegetarian as parents are. I am sure something can be arranged, have a lovely time.

Such a pity there is no veggie option for GS.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

To be honest he has been happy with his big plate of chips and beans, with bread and butter on the side!

Not all children would be though, and what if they don't like baked beans?! There should be at least one veggie option on the children's menu.

Gem - I thought all children liked baked beans, but two of my four GCs don't like them, and one isn't keen!
