    The dis Honesty Box

OH has been successfully selling her tomato plants grown from seed for several days now and has sold a lot. At 50p each they are a bargain.
We leave them on our drive in a shallow cardboard box, along with a Cadbury's Heroes box with a slot in the lid for the money.
Each day the money is in there and plants taken.

Yesterday evening as we were about to eat there was a knock at the door. I wondered who could be calling on a Saturday night especially as it was raining so no one would have wanted a doorstep chat. There was man there smiling, and offering me a £2 coin. He said he was buying four plants but didn't want to just leave the money. I thanked him and went inside. I wondered why he didn't just leave it in the box, then it occurred to me that maybe the box was no longer there!
Sure enough some little s*ds had stolen it.
Luckily there would only have been £2 in, as OH had removed £2 earlier and the man had brought his to the door.
It will be kids, but how mean. I'm glad they only got away with £2.

Gem - as you say, it might only be £2, but it's the principle of some little *** breaking your trust.

Gem, that is awful, it happens (happened) so often at the different stalls here, now they are chained and bolted down.

I often read of how many plants, flowers etc are taken without paying for them.

          As you say,probably kids,but i wouldn't trust anyone.
Glad there wasn't a lot of money in.

Same thing in our village Gem One lady regularly puts out fruit/vegetables etc and leaves a box for the money. She's recently found that people are taking the stuff and not paying for it. As she said , all you need to do is knock on the door and say you haven't any money with you, can you come back and pay and it would be OK.

I think it's happening all over at the moment, sadly. Leaves a nasty taste in your mouth though.

It is very annoying and a bit upsetting.
However we take heart that a lot of people left money, no plants went missing without money left, and the last man took the time to come to the door in the rain to pay us when there was no box.

It's such a pity that one 'bad apple' leaves such a nasty taste. There are many good and honest people about, like the ones who have paid and especially the man who took the trouble to come to your door.
