Just had a call supposedly from our Washing machine insurance company.
started off fine said it's due for renewal blah blah blah
Then said we can renew it over the phone just give us your card details .
At this point B said no way just send details by post and we will sort it that way .
Caller ... sorry we can't send details by post in this current climate.
B.. Why? Covid hasn't stopped any post .
Skirted the issue , then said if you renew today I can authorize a discount
B... I don't give my card details over the phone
Caller ....I can assure you it's safe I'm the supervisor.
B ....No sorry
This went back and forth for another 5 minutes B constantly just saying no
Then they said well if you don't do it today it will run out and you won't be insured .
B said fine I will let it expire and take out insurance with another company and I'm ending this call now and hung up
I wonder how many people have been caught out this way thinking oh it's because of the Covid they working this way .
Honestly they are persistent and will try anything won't they
That's what I said to B I bet lots are caught out . He rang his Mam to warn her luckily she won't give anyone any personal information without checking with one of them first and his Sister usually does any things like that for her .
I got a phone call a few weeks ago, I was sat sewing, it was a UK number so I answered it, the man told me he had received a mail from me saying that I wanted to invest money! I was annoyed, he had my phone number and mail address so how that worked I do not know, he couldn't pronounce my name correct but I am used to that. I talked Dutch to him and he TOLD me to speak English to him so I hung up, this is the part I do not understand, he phoned me back about 5 or 6 times but with numbers from different countries!!! I didn't answer and spent the morning blocking calls.
Lizzie - I don't think they do have a conscience! They seem to think everybody is fair game. Sometimes I say to them 'can I ask you a question?' They always say yes because they think they've 'got' me and I ask if their mothers know what kind of slimy job they do for a living and would she be proud of them. I don't suppose it makes any difference, but it makes me feel better.
Oma - B was very patient I think. Well done to him for being so alert to the scam.

Wasn’t it pleasant at the beginning of lockdown when it seemed to stop! We had the appliance call yesterday too. Non stop talking. I haven’t had insurance on my machines for years so she was on a loser anyway

It must be open season for tired old scams! I had the one about having an accident that wasn't my fault today. I said 'oh, yes, I have'. Then she asked when it was and I said 1962. There was silence ..... then she tried again. "Can you tell me when the accident was?" "Yes, perhaps you didn't hear me. It was in 1962." More silence, and then she put the phone down!

Scam I heard of today is to knock on the door of house having building work done claiming to work for the builder and asking for part payment of the job.
The police advised not to answer the door especially now with the virus to think about as well. These people have no scruples at all preying on the vulnerable.
