    Supermarket Madness

Today we needed to do a supermarket shop - not my favourite task, and usually OH goes on his own, but I needed to go to the garden centre as well, so we both set off in torrential rain, driving through flooded roads. Not the best start to the day!

A large section of the car park was cordoned off - they're redesigning it and have changed the road layout. They have made the spaces a little bit bigger, which is great - or will be when it's all done. But meantime, chaos reigns and people try to follow the new layout - or don't notice there's a new layout!! The only thing that's driving as expected is the rain.

I wasn't particularly worried about coronavirus-covered trolley handles, but as the trolleys were out in the rain, they were probably ok anyway. But I do hate a wet trolley!!

It was busy. If people aren't panic-buying time must have slipped and it's the last big shop before Christmas. No, it's definitely panic-buying - or is it. OK, there was no hand sanitiser, but all the vitamins had disappeared completely! A great expanse of empty shelf where they should be. Things must be bad. No eggs at all! Eeek. People were rushing here, there and everywhere, looking anxious, stressed and bewildered. They really did need reindeer antlers to cheer them up.

Poor OH would have been tearing his hair out if that was an option!

He asked the lady on the Lloyds pharmacy counter, who is not known for her empathy, about the vit tabs - "Aisle 9" she growled. Ok, so that's where the doughnuts, and cookies usually live, but sure enough, that's where they were. This is now the "Well-being" aisle a lovely helpful member of staff explained. Along with those great huge tubs of powdery stuff body builders love, and 'free from' triple chocolate cookies. And a load of items I don't even recognise.

The eggs were somewhere else - I've no idea where as OH went in search - but the lady explained that the sign couldn't be moved without taking the ceiling tiles down which is why the egg place was occupied by pesto sauces etc.

It took two of us nearly 2 hours to do a shop that wasn't even large!

The lovely member of staff who helped us was wearing a bright orange t-shirt with "Can I help you" printed on the back. I dragged OH away before he asked her if she could put everything back in its proper place!!

Half of me was amused at the absurdity of the delusional people in Head Office who think it's a 'good idea' to put, say cooking oils where the cream used to be, and the other half of me was just plain fed up!

We went to Costco today. It was worse than Christmas! The queues to pay were never ending. Every trolley seemed to be stacked with toilet paper! 😳 people were frantically loading up with packs of toilet paper! Why? Why oh why? Is a side effect of Coronavirus the β€˜green apple quickstep? OH said if we run out we can always tear up newspaper and thread it on string and hang it on the back of the lav door.

Because we won't be going shopping at the weekend, i have done an online shop for Tuesday.
        I won't be surprised if i don't get everything.
Yesterday morning, one of the early morning presenters said she had been to the supermarket.
She only wanted a packet of pasta, and said there was just one packet left on the shelf. So she grabbed it quick.

Oma - this was Sainsburys, too. We bought kitchen roll, because we needed it, but no toilet rolls. We like living on the edge!

Grauntie and Oma - we did buy a newspaper - just the one. It'll tide us over if necessary!!

To add to the fun, there were several self-service tills and something other sort of facility out of action. I'm sure the tannoyed apologies made everyone trying to use those tills feel better.

Nanto - I should think shopping would be the last thing on your mind this week-end - you've got other fish to fry! I went to get dried yeast, still on the baking shelf, and I did notice there was no wholemeal bread flour, or much flour of any sort actually.

Oh my goodness, I am waiting for the smart mater changer, hope he/she comes soon as I need to go food shopping, not sure if there will be anything left. I am okay for toilet rolls.

WI am not even bothering to go shopping today I have enough to keep me going for a couple of weeks,I don't use too much bread I split my loaves of bread into slices of 3/4 and freeze them taking out as needed. No need for loo rolls either as we have a very good free paper and there is always The Liverpool Echo the Thursday edition is the best as it is full of job adverts and the football section for the week-end
I just can't understand the panic when this is over all these people will have certainly overstocked and not have to shop for weeks on end.

Glamm - haha - I can picture you cutting up the Echo Thursday edition.

I can't understand the panic either. Even if some items disappear off the shelf for a while, it's not the end of the world. You just do without or work round it.

I bet lots of the people who've been buying up strong flour have never baked bread in their lives. I hope they remembered the yeast as well!

Did a small shop this morning at our local Tesco. Plenty of stock, the only shelf that was a bit empty was the pasta. I needed some and was able to get a pack. Otherwise, plenty of everything. No-one seemed to be stocking up, just normal trolley loads. I did buy a 4 pack of kitchen roll instead of my usual two, but only because it worked out cheaper.

What did surprise us was a member of staff sorting out all the unwrapped bread with bare hands. Not a good idea at any time I’d have thought. I will only buy wrapped bread in future.

I was in Waitrose this afternoon and there were no toilet rolls, no dried pasta and tinned tomatoes. No paracetamol and any vitamins so another shopper told me. My DD and I were in the same shop but didn't know it, met in the car park.

Plant - I was surprise the vitamins were on the shelf in Sainsburys. I was buying our usual 'Peter Pan' (to keep us young!!!) but there were plenty. It's funny what people worry about.

I wonder if there's a sort of collective memory of the Great Toilet Roll Shortage of (I think) the early 70s. Does anyone remember that - I can't remember whether it was before or after The Great Sugar Shortage, but both were quite entertaining.

Nanto - that sounds sensible - at least you know it hasn't been fingered by customers!

I really don't understand the mentality of some people. We went to CostCo the other day & it was ridiculous. I went to the optician part while OH went to get a few bits we needed. (Their frozen macaroni cheese in breadcrumbs are to die for). The checkout girl said she couldn't believe what some people are doing. Now they're limiting certain items, because of this. On entering the store the bloke who checks your pass wiped the trolley handle. Ours + the next customer's + the next & the next with the same wipe. Ha!
