    Travellers

Everyone is on alert in our area as there is a risk of large groups of travellers moving onto any open space on their way to a wedding in a nearby town. Villagers are standing guard on village greens. They have pitched up in all sorts of places, even a church car park. The farmer friend of my son and dil whose farm we were at on Sat. has be very worried as his farm is on route to the wedding, they are leaving a mess everywhere they have been, no wonder they are unpopular. A couple of travellers were caught trying to fleece an elderly lady for £400 to clean her drive, fortunately her gardener was there and chased them off. Not long ago they took over a park and ride car park next to a Waitrose store, the children were running in groups some distracting whilst others stole things, they had to get extra security staff on the doors. We are very fed up with them here.

Dearest Plant I feel so sorry for you all and for your area these people will get in and park up anywhere they can squeeze in leaving mayhem behind them, whilst I know they have a right to live they should have deligated places to park up they just don't get what damage they cause.
At present in my area we are on alert as a Fairground is in Town and causing a lot of bother, ever since they arrived a lot of garden furniture and stone planters have gone missing and whilst you cannot point fingers its funny that it happens every time they turn up,when they leave the area is covered with rubbish and debris which the Council then has to pay for to remove.
We have heard of a few of the Travellers that follow the Fairground go around asking for gardening and pathlaying jobs offering to take the homeowners to the cashpoint to withdraw money for payment, the Police are not interested as they cannot pin point the culprits.
You have my sympathy dear Plantaholic x

Plant, what a nuisance. they always seem to be above the law.
Not surprised villagers are standing guard on the greens.
      They really are unsavoury characters.

No wonder you are all fed up Plant.

People have a right to live a Traveller lifestyle, but not to spoil the lives of others or break the law.

We used to have a problem not so far from us but now a lot of shops have been built on the land they used to park on ,
The amount of building waste plastic windows etc they left was disgusting , it would cost our council thousands to clear it away .

a lot of farm land around have started to put huge boulders piled up at any entrances they think they may try to park up on ,

We have a small garden centre who now has security guards with dogs when the fair is in town to stop them parking on their land , they shouldn't have to do that but its cheaper than trying to get them off by going to court

It takes ages if you have to go to court, I understand if it is council land they can just remove them

Oma our local Council have also put those big boulders up all around the grassed dipped area's which front the promenard to stop them parking up,the mess that was left was disgusting and cost £ks to clean up.
We have had strangers knocking at doors asking if we want to buy new mattress's etc, some people who have been conned into buying them take delivery only to find they are secondhand and the covering inside the plastic has been roughly sewn over a very used mattress which had originally been taken from the local Council tip, what a disgrace as the people who they are targeting are older people who cannot inspect the items properly, all came to light when a family member helped a person carry the mattress into their house.

I have heard the same with Carpets , people buy a carpet from them on unrolling they are either dirty and used or faulted or too short

Our council has out big boulders all around the edge of our local park and playing field and also all round the edge of the football pitch at the leisure centre. The mess they left after they had previously pitched there was unbelievable. Also, the numbers of petty crime, break ins etc went up dramatically when they were in the area. If they want to be treated with respect then they need to be respectful........

Some years ago a member of the Travelers community bought a piece of land on the outskirts of a village near to us and before the council could re-act the Travelers had laid concrete bases and moved mobile homes onto the site. They have landscaped the site and put up a nice walled gated entrance and the children are being educated in local schools. As far as I know they are just getting on with their lives and although there was an outcry when they moved in, all seems okay now.

Plant there is a large travelers gated community next to our youngest grandchildren school it's been there years. The children go to our GC school. The little girls are no bother they tend to stick together, but the boys want to have fist fights all the time. The teachers are always separating them and they have a colourful vocabulary
