So much unnecessary plastic at Asda

Today I went to Asda for petrol on my way to GS's school. I didn't get any as I couldn't get my petrol cap off, but that's another story.

I popped into the store for a couple of cards and some fruit. Apart from bananas, which were available both loose and wrapped in plastic, everything else was prepackaged. Row upon row of apples of all varieties , and pears all wrapped. A sea of plastic. Oranges all in either plastic wrap or plastic net.
I usually shop in Tesco or Sainsbury's and although they have prepacked fruit and vegetables, as well as the loose ones, nothing on the scale of Asda.
I don't know if this is Asda generally or just ours, but I imagine they are all the same.

I think we are all becoming aware of the use of plastic, I am going to start taking tubs to Waitrose for them to put my fish in. Even if you buy your fruit or veg. loose you do feel you need to put it into a bag which is plastic. We really need to change the way we shop.

Very rare we buy fruit in the supermarket.
I don't eat fresh fruit,so i let hubby get his own.
He always goes to the fruit and veg market, where they still use brown paper bags.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

Our fruit and veg shop in the village uses brown paper bags - and I keep them and reuse them at home for all sorts of things and then eventually put them in the garden compost.

I always try and buy loose fruit and if I'm trying to make a point about plastic I don't put the fruit into bags.

Gem, our nearest Asda usually has plenty of unpackaged fruit and veg, but it's too far for us to shop there regularly.

Our village greengrocer has paper bags and we often buy fruit and veg from there. With my busy lifestyle though sometimes there just isn't that extra time when picking it up at the supermarket is quicker. Supermarkets will surely get more on the ball now and reintroduce paper bags? Tesco have white paper bags in which to put loose mushrooms (but when I order them on an online order they come in little plastic bags!! )

I think pressure is mounting to make retailers change their packaging.

I did notice in IKEA they are doing away with lots of plastic the rolls of rugs used to be stacked with plastic tubes between them now it's that egg box sort of packs between them ,
Aldi today had more loose fruit and veg than usual although they always have had most veg loose .
