    Unexpected Garden Visitor

On Monday night OH let Eva out into the garden for her usual late night 'comfort stop'. She went off to the left and then down the lawn without triggering the security light, but OH saw her crouch down and she started to come back the same way. Suddenly the lights went on, and Eva was off at a rate of knots down to the bottom of the garden, clearly after something. She followed it along the back fence, and it went one side of the shed. Eva went the other and caught up with it and chased it down the side of the house to the side gate, where she cornered it. OH called her off, and then he saw what she was chasing - a badger! It was keen to escape, and scrabbled a hole in the fence to get underneath it!

Eva was very lucky it didn't turn on her - they can do a lot of damage with those claws - but at least she came when OH called her.

We've lived in this house over 20 years and have never seen a badger in the garden before!

Oma, he certainly was keen to get away from her. We were wondering where its sett could be, but apparently they can travel up to 3 miles from 'home' and of course it's the breeding season, so he may have been looking for love. I don't think Eva provided any!

Yes they can be dangerous if they are cornered. Well done Eva for coming back straight away.

Good job Eva told him where to go... badgers are the last residents you need under your garden!

GM - as long as they eat all the slugs and snails they're welcome!!

I must admit, if Mr Brock is a regular visitor I'm more concerned about him passing ticks and fleas on to her!

Qwerty - take more water with it!!!

We get foxes in our garden but no badgers. Don’t think they like the airport much. The foxes at times make loud noises that sometimes sound like babies crying (well to me they do). In our big house we slept in the front but knew there were foxes in the rough behind the house as we kept a big area separate for wildlife and flowers. When we moved here I was always worried about my old Georgie cat if he didn’t come in at night although he had a flap into the shed where he had a nest. We are very close to the two man made rivers (not canals) and have occasionally found traces of water rats which I don’t like so we never put bird food anywhere they can get to. We used to have a big problem with green parakeets. They would flock onto the runways, the bird scaring people would do their job and very often the bruddy birds would flock into our big birch trees as the highest and nearest place. Once we had the trees
chopped down the problem was solved. Woe betide if you did not know the area and parked your car outside of our garden fence - would get absolutely covered in bird poo. Sometimes there would be so many parakeets I thought the trees were going to fall over, It would take them five minutes and more to fly out of the trees to other places AND they were extremely noisy. You could hear them wherever you were in the flat screeching and arguing. Thank goodness we haven’t had any in the garden since the trees went. Always wondered why there were no big trees I could see out if the window ..........
