Oooh, it's quite hard to choose! I think I'd try and consider the growing ease or otherwise, as well as the culinary uses.

So - French tarragon, Basil, Parsley, Rosemary, Oregano and Thyme.

    What did you choose, Plant?

Not able to grow basil outside, which I love so bought Tarragon, Oregano, Thyme, Chives Sage and other mint, I already have Rosemary. I think the French Tarragon might not be very hardy, will have to see.

Plant - all good choices. I didn't think about chives or mint because it grows in the garden (the mint pops up through concrete behind the greenhouse!!)

French tarragon needs winter protection. I grow it in a large pot. It dies down in the winter and I keep it in the greenhouse, out of the frost, but I'm sure yours would do just as well in a corner of your sun room or a sheltered porch. But last year for some reason it died and I couldn't get any this year. I'll definitely try harder to get some in the spring though - it's one of my favourites.

Flat leaf parsley. Chives, basil. Purple sage, oregano, coriander. I bring it in and dry it in the cooker (it has a drying setting but I used to microwave it) and then bag it, seal it and freeze it.

Dill, I love how it looks and the bees love it too. Tarragon, thyme, lemon balm, marjoram, chives. These along side parsley, sage, rosemary, mint. I managed to keep a tarragon plant going against a south facing wall for five years then it gave up the ghost.

GM - my tarragon plant lasted about the same time. Perhaps that's their natural life span.

Surprised several of you mentioned Basil, I only use it in a pot from the supermarket. Didn't see any coriander plants at the garden center or purple sage just the green one. They did have lemon balm but wasn't sure about that as I have never used it. I am at a disadvantage as I don't have a sense of smell, well not much.

Plant all my herbs are in terracotta troughs in the garden. Neighbour has a huge patch of mint in her bit of the shared front garden, she always lets it go to seed so I nick some of that to make mint sauce or dry and freeze. She doesn't do much cooking so I never did understand why she put it in in the first place.

I have bought 2 plastic troughs and I shall put them in there, mint will go elsewhere as it will overtake all the others. I would plant them in the ground but all our veg. garden is now an orchard, well it will be when the trees grow a bit more.

I've got mint, parsley, tarragon, chives, rosemary, oregano and marjoram though mainly use the first two. The parsley is from the supermarket. Apparently parsley only grows from seed when the woman rules the house!
