Your best and worst decorating colours

What are the best and worst colours you've ever used, or inherited in a new house?

The deep purple in a bedroom!!! Thinking back I have had colours I wouldn't even think about today!!!!

One of the bedrooms in our current house belonged to teenage son. It was all decorated in black and white. The walls painted in black and white splodges a bit like a cow pattern. The woodwork all in black To make matters worse this was the room designated as my therapy room , to have lavender walls and white paintwork. It took a lot of work!

The living room in my first marital home was very 70s - beige and brown. It was a small room and had 2 beige walls, 2 dark brown and a dark brown door and brown floor cushions. We thought it was lovely

There is an advert for a lovely staircase like Daisies on the back of the radio times this week and the walls are green but a really nice shade. Looks nice in a hall but I don’t think I would like it in my Lounge and definitely not my bedroom

Our living room is a nice subtle shade of green.
Our dining room has 3 sort of dark beige walls and the other a lovely shade of French blue.
We decorated hall and staircase etc a couple of years ago, in 2 shades of grey.
There is barely any wallspace in the kitchen but what there is is a turquoise colour.
We are happy with all those choices

I mentioned before that when we got our house all the rooms were in some shade of green.

Now our house is all cream shades, but we have accent walls.
Living room is dark red on the front wall. Kitchen has a wall in dark grey.
In the small front bedroom where we now have the computer has paper with birds on.

In our first marital home we painted the hall and stair wall in a deep yellow, with a pale yellow carpet. I liked it then, although keeping the carpet pale yellow was a bit of a challenge. It was the next house where we did the living room and staircase wall dark green. I've still got the vase I bought in Boots in Liverpool the exact same colour!

We bought a new house once and that was all battleship grey. As was next door. This was the 70s, the decade style forgot, and we had a honey coloured shag pile carpet in the living room, dining room and stairs. Even worse, a purple carpet in the guest bedroom, with matching curtains.

Our next house was also a new build, and painted (sort of) in builder's Magnolia - everywhere.

Our living room was shades of blue for years, but a few years ago I decided in the middle of one winter, that I wanted Spring in the house! So now we have a sofa and armchair in soft pale green, and the other armchair is pale grey leather. One rug is shades of the same green and grey stripes, the other rug is pale grey and the walls are pale grey. I still like it, but would probably do something entirely different next time. We have a large rug in the dining room (which I remember Oma saying she liked) but I wanted to change it. It was great in the previous house but OH still loves it. We ended up painting one long wall in a deep raspberry pink. It's all a bit of a mish mash, but with soft lighting it doesn't look too bad on a winter's evening.


Nanto that bird paper is so pretty. I would like that, although generally I'm not a great fan of wallpaper. Accent walls really give character to a room, don't they.

Gem, your home sounds warm and cherished, but I don't envy you having to cover over that black room with lavender.

Lizzie, I think the room with the white sofa is a lovely shade, but I'd want nice big windows with light flooding in. But it must look very cosy in the evening. I'm not so sure about the two shades of green thoughI think either one of the greens would work well on its own.

Plant, it's amazing what we allow our children to do, isn't it!

My DS1 and DIL decided years ago that all walls in their house should be primrose white! They are still all primrose white. Theirs is the only garage I know which doesn't have a row of half-empty paint tins in it.

I am the worst person to have to choose decorating colours, I am never really happy with the result. Nanto I love that bird wallpaper, I am sure the flower one looks nice too. My sitting dining room has all dark furniture, mainly oak so I have kept the walls a light creamy yellow. I am not a very adventurous artistic person.

Nan2 , we have cream curtains with bird pattern on in one of our bedrooms. We both really liked them when saw them .

Nothing wrong with neutral walls Plant . I bet all our homes are lovely in their different ways.

I’m afraid I’m a all white person ,
I do have a beige type of wallpaper on my main wall and that’s the only wallpaper in the house , it took us about 10 years to decide on a paper neither of us like large patterns of flowers ,
We have pale green on the lower half of the hall.
The only colour in the entire house

Everyone knows the Drama of the pink bedroom wall and the yellow wall in the kitchen that I couldn’t live with and had to re paint within days 🙄

My DD is big on colour and thinks I’m odd only wanting white .

Apart from the Battle ship grey that was in our first house , we once allowed our DS to paint his bedroom dark Blue
When it came to changing it it was a nightmare,
2 coats of undercoat and 6 coats of white and it still had a tinge of Blue , we gave up at the end and just lived with it.

In the 70s we has the typical Orange & and Brown wallpaper with a yellow swirly pattern shag pile carpet and Purple curtains ,
Looking back it was hideous but all the fashion then along with Avocado bathroom fittings.

We never had the avocado bathroom suite, but i remember them.
Many years ago we had a yellow bathroom suite,then changed it to pink.
Ours is white now,but i really liked my pink bathroom suite.
