    A new border

I was going to put this with the Patio of Horrors thread, but it's much more cheerful, so I'll keep it separate.

We have dug out most of what was in the border at the bottom of our garden - a lot of weeds, thuggish plants that had taken over, and lilc tree/bush which had outgrown its space and its welcome, and a tree stump. So there is all this bare earth waiting to be planted up. I have to keep hoe-ing the weed seedlings that keep coming back so I'm keen to reduce the amount of space they can sneak into!

I know roughly what I want (OH leaves choices like this to me), and today I made a start.

I got a camellia - which I think will flower earlier than the one we already have, 3 hellebores, which seem to like our garden, and an evergreen shrub whose name I've forgotten, but it looks nice. I also got a blue grass for the front garden - we have a few already but they seem to fill odd spaces quite well - and a tray of traditional lemon primroses to replace the ones Patio Man killed. Hopefully OH will dig some holes tomorrow!

Oh, and some bird seed for our feathered friends when the weather gets colder.

You have been busy Daisy, I hope all the plants grow and give you plenty of lovely colour in the garden.

Oh it all sounds lovely Daisy
And hard work so be careful!

We need something to fill the space in front of our front window. A dying small hedge was there when we moved in which eventually died off and we took up.
It's dry soil there. We want something small but can never decide what!

That does sound exciting Daisy. I have a new border to plant, I might pinch some of your ideas. My border is quite sunny so I don’t think a camellia will do well there.

You have been busy , but be careful with that arm ,
I have removed all the summer bedding from the top border and replaced it with Cyclamen and Viola , its only a small narrow border ,
The bottom border has several evergreen plants but some that have died off so I need to find something for that border ,

That border is in the shade so I do want to find stuff that doesn't need changing and will be there throughout the year , maybe more evergreen shrubs .

Plant - this border is south-facing but I hope the Camellia will be ok as it's shaded by a neighbour's trees in the afternoon.

Oma - I love both cyclamen and violas. They look far too delicate to survive winter storms and snow, but they are so hardy. Evergreen shrubs are great for 'difficult' bits of the garden. Is that border damp or dry shade?

The plant whose name I couldn't remember is called Drymis Lanceolata

Gem - do you want another small hedge or something just to cover the ground prettily?

                Not another hedge Daisy no.

A lot of the time that area is hidden by one of our cars being parked in front of it, which is why it's not been a priority I suppose.
                The blue grass sounds interesting.

New border planted yesterday, joint effort Sil and myself, he did the digging and planting with me directing operations. We planted two varieties of Photinia, 2 smallish Azaleas, 1 Hebe, 3 Grasses, 3 Heucheras, and some heathers. I have some short daffs to go in yet, I will scatter them and plant where they fall. Fingers crossed they all survive.

Daisy its a damp shady part does get a little sun but only for a hour or so ,
That's why we put the hardy plants in there and Shrubs ,

I have put my spring bulbs in the top border im keeping everything crossed they come up .

Oma - there are ferns which like damp shade and come up each year, and they look feathery and pretty.

Plant - your new border sounds beautiful - and once it's established fairly low maintenance, but plenty of interest. I love Heucheras but they won't grow in our garden.

Daisy, I can’t grow Heucheras in pots, have tried in the past but they are prone to get grubs in the roots. I have also included the lovely blue flower, whose name escapes me again

Plant - Lithodora? It's such a fabulous shade of blue.
