Artificial flowers

I know lots of people swear by them, and modern ones are very natural-looking, but I've never really fancied them. But some time ago OH turned a large vase - about 20" high and about 10" across at the top. I obviously can't put real flowers in and a few weeks ago I found some really well made (life-like) artificial flowers and greenery online. I just popped them in the vase, knowing I needed to arrange them in a more orderly way.

I've just got round to getting chicken wire to hold them in place and today I had a go at arranging them. Some needed cutting and they were so strong OH did them using a saw! They're not quite right yet, but OH was busy with other things and I didn't want to ask him to cut about half an inch of some of them!

Does anyone else have an artificial arrangement and do you find them easy to arrange? How do you keep them looking clean?

Daisy I have had them in the past and it is difficult to get them to stay in the position you want them without some kind of support ,
I always used either the small end of my hoover thingy to get any dust of or a small paint brush dipped in a little fabric softener and dabbed dry just so it was damp ,
It takes off dust and leaves a nice smell too .

Some of the stems are so hard to cut , I have often use wire cutters to get through the coating then had to bend the wire back and forth till they snap ,

Daisy, I have one vase with artificial flowers in my bedroom, I take them out on the balcony and spray them with water then let them dry, like new every time.

I had some tall ones in tall vase in the hallway of my previous home. I doubt I was very good at keeping them dust free at all times!

I only have some artificial poppies in my sunroom and as Gemini said I find it difficult to arrange them and the stems are impossible to cut so I just bent them. Dust them?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found them difficult to arrange, and many thanks for the cleaning tips.

Oma - I like the idea of using fabric softener. I could match the scent of the fabric stuff to the flower!! (Haha, though, in my dreams.)

I was amused this morning when Cooper went to them and had a good sniff!!

Artificial flowers are not for me. I solved the water problem in an unglazed jug by cutting a pop bottle to size and using that inside.

Grauntie - I did think of doing something like that, but the shape of the vase makes it difficult to get anything wide enough for the height I'd need to be in proportion to the vase. Also I didn't really want to commit to keeping it supplied with a lot of long-stemmed fresh flowers. As you can see, I still need to sort them out a bit!

I haven't had artificial flowers for many years.
We have got a small artificial plant in the back porch.

Awwv thank you, Nanto. I need to shorten the beech leaves and a couple of the flowers. The idea is that I'll try and keep it a bit seasonal - so some autumn leaves and chrysanths, etc, followed by some wintery leaves etc, and so on. Whether I will actually manage that I don't know. I'm keeping an eye out for sales, to keep the cost down.
