    Garden waste collections

    Is yours being collected?
We have no garden waste collection between the end of October and April each year. Between then it either stays in your green garden waste bin, or you can take it to the green area of the recycling centre
Now those centres are closed and we have had no green bin collection this year.
So, the bins which are always full for the first collection of the year are still full. Nice weather and free time means everyone is gardening, and nowhere for the garden waste to go.
We have large overflow garden piles in out own garden and at my mum's now.
We do feel they could at least have done that first one.
Daisy mentioned hers was to be collected, so I wondered what the situation around the country was.

Our green bins are overflowing, not sure when they will be starting again. We have it collected every two weeks all year round normally. As we are two households we get two grey bins, 2 blue for tins, glass and plastic, 2 green for garden waste, paper boxes and small food bins for food waste to be wrapped in recyclable bags. We do have two compost bins, left-over when OH had his veg garden and used the compost. We have hedges on three sides of our property and large grass areas so very difficult without collections.

Ours is collected every 2 weeks as well Plant.
Our ordinary bin and recycling boxes are still being collected on the regular fortnightly basis. It's just the garden waste which is stopped until further notice.

We haven't had a green bin collection for ages. During the Winter we have it collected monthly, the rest of the year fortnightly. We've been told green collections will begin the week beginning 4th May!!! We used to take any extra to the tip, but that's closed so like everyone else the pile is growing! We've been told we can put food waste in our black bin( general waste) so I suppose that's keeping the flies and maggots at bay.

Someone in the village has advertised that he'll dispose of your green bin waste...for a price! He started at £25 for one bin, but has now reduced it to £15 for one,£25 for 2. Not sure that I trust him to dispose of it properly though.

I can imagine the queue for the tip when it does open will stretch back to the main road!

Will let you know if/when our green bin collection starts again.

OH says our garden waste bin was emptied in line with the first cut of the lawn. Not sure how they judge that. They've cancelled any further collection of garden waste until further notice. He's going round to B's later to cut her lawns for her. Because she's on crutches now she can't do those jobs that she normally takes pleasure in.

Our collections are the same as yours Gem.
When the bin men came yesterday, hubby asked if they would be starting the green bin collections
He told hubby to put garden waste in the grey bin, thats for household rubbish.
Well we're not supposed to said hubby. bin man said don't worry about it.

We don't have bins, as in wheelie bins, food waste bins etc. Just black bags for household waste, clear ones for recycling and a box for glass recycling. You have to pay separately for a green garden waste bag - it's not much bigger than an IKEA bag either. Most people have two, we don't have any! We've got two big wooden compost bins and a trailer. So garden waste goes in the compost or in the trailer and then when that's full OH takes it to the tip. But of course the tip closed, just as our trailer got filled up.

At the end of March the Council stopped everybody's green bag collection. I think they collect once a month in winter and every two weeks the rest of the year. They're starting again next week, but everybody has got so much garden waste it will take ages for them to get rid of it all! DS2, who's got a huge lawn, says it will take years for the Council to catch up again!!

Daisy our council charge too and for rubbish removals . You can have 1 free removal of 4 items after that it's a charge of £28 a time
I think that's why there is so much fly tipping ,People can't afford it so those without transport collect it all up then pay these so called rubbish removals who just dump it anywhere .

I feel we are very lucky, we don't get charged for any rubbish collection, the food waste is collected every week (not at the present time) and the other three bins once a fortnight. If you leave cardboard boxes by the bins they will take that. You have to pay if it is building materials to be collected.

Plant - I feel we are lucky too. Both general waste and recycling are collected every week, and glass once a month - all free, including anything like cardboard boxes, packing materials or similar left out with the black bags. They only charge for garden waste and if you ask them to come and collect something large like furniture or electrical appliances.

I agree with Oma, I think there's a lot of fly tipping because people don't want to pay to dump stuff.

At our local tip if you have a trailer that's over 6' in length you're charged industrial rates. OH's trailer end up being measured every time because it's 5' 11"!!
