Yes, Daisy baked beans on the packet, partner gave then to her for Christmas as a joke. I suppose GM will be taking care of them now. I hope they will not come up covered in tomato sauce.

Plant - a nice project for GD1. They could make a wigwam for them.
My Lupins are making progress, and there's one cucumber seedling pushing its tiny head up through the compost. Also a few delicate little Alyssums are showing. I grow them in a terracotta bowl and keep them in the greenhouse for their delicious scent. I'm impatient for tomatoes, melons and the salad crops to get going. The seed was quite old - some out of date - so they're a bit of a gamble at the moment.

Sorry not to contribute. I feel as tho I need my thinking cap on to take it all in as it's new to me. All the Nurseries & garden centres have closed now so I'd have to research online availability."Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

Gem - thank you for that - I'll check out our local nurseries, I need seed and compost.
Nana - you are contributing!! Basically, seeds and plants want to grow so if you stick them in soil or compost give them light in the day-time and water when the soil gets dry most things will grow. It never ceases to amaze me that from a tiny seed you can get a beautiful plant - it really is Nature's miracle.

Thanks for making it simple Daisy. I think I get put off by all the different composts, soil acidity & all the technical stuff. I also get confused about perennial etc. I suppose it's like anything else that's new, you just have to learn it & practice."Good friends help you to find important things when you have lost them....your smile, your hope, and your courage."

Nana - it really is simple. Yes, there are some plants that have very specific needs, but most plants are adapted to growing pretty much anywhere in any type of soil. They do better if it's their 'favourite' conditions, that's all.

After starting off so well, my little Lupin seedlings have all shrivelled up. The day before yesterday I forgot to take the lid off the propagator and it got too hot for them. I'll sow some more and try and do better! My tomatoes haven't germinated, but the seed was very old. A neighbour has kindly offered some plants which I'm very grateful for.
I've now got two melon seedlings and about 5 cucumbers, the Allysum are growing too. Nothing else is making much progress, but at least it backs up my insistence on buying fresh seeds usually.
