    Cleaning jewellery

Grauntie mentioned that she's just cleaned her jewellery, and Oma says she has a gadget to do it that shakes the dirt off.

I'm intrigued and mystified how Oma's thingy works, and think Grauntie has a magic wand!

How do you clean your jewellery?

Mine is mostly silver and I use one of those zinc plates, boiling hot water and a dollop of soda crystals. The dirt just floats off, then a quick wash in warm soapy water, rinse and dry, job done. But there are things I can't use this for, like my engagement ring, so I'm wondering what other people use?

I have one of those "gadgets", use it to clean my specs as well, saw them do that in the shop so thought it would be handy.

A friend once told me about cleaning silver jewellery with toothpaste. Amazingly it works, and it means if you forget and you are away in a hotel you can easily shine up your silver!
I have to say it doesn't last as long as cleaning it with silver cleaner, so you need to do it more often, but it's what I generally do.
I'm not keen on gold, so apart from my wedding ring there is none of that to clean. I don't have an engagement ring.

I am sorely tempted by the machine that Oma has. I ended up poking around with a brush and flicking out a moonstone from a ring. Good job it wasn’t a precious stone. 🙄
I have all sorts. I had my engagement ring restyled a few times before I was happy. Now I am having my original wedding ring (never wear it) remade into a ‘halo’ style, like a curtain ring, round all over.
I do like making jewellery but only junk.
Not seen the zinc plates though, will scoot over to safari and google.

There are several advertised on Amazon, different sizes, different prices. Which one do you have Oma?

Grauntie, I believe you can also just use some ordinary kitchen tinfoil instead of a zinc plate, but I've never tried it. I use my zinc plate for other silver as well - we've got some silver-plated cutlery which it's really useful for.

I didn't know you made jewellery - clever lady.

This is almost identical to mine:

I put it in a plastic washing up bowl, add soda crystals, a pint of boiling water and more very hot water and just bung everything in. As long as each item touches another item they will be cleaned.

                    Edit -
Just seen aa advert for my Qwicksilver zinc plate which I've had for about 20 years!!

Qwicksilver is the world's leading precious metal cleaning plate that removes tarnish and cleans silver, gold, brass, other precious metals and jewellery.

Thanks for the links Daisy. I have tried silver foil but didn’t find it worked very well. Will investigate further.

I pop my rings in a SMALL amount of gin, give them a shake, leave them for a bit, get any gungy bits out with a pin, give them a scrub with a toothbrush and rinse them under the tap! Rings all shiny again!
Believe you can and you're halfway there.

WeeGranny - what, no ice and lemon! I've heard about using gin but I've never tried it. I could do with giving my engagement ring a bit of a clean up.
