Airing Beds

    Airing Beds

We were talking about this yesterday ,

When I was in the hairdressers last week some how we got talking about letting the bed air ,

I said every morning when I get up I pull the duvet back and open the windows to let the bed air even if only for a hour while I have breakfast get sorted and ready .
Most of the girls in the salon thought that was odd and asked why I do that .
They all said they make the bed as soon as they get up and never thought about airing the bed ,
Yesterday when we were having our meal I was telling DD and friends this ,

DD said I always do that because that's what you taught me and my friend said she does too its how she was taught .

Is it a generation thing do you think ?
It seems to be the younger ones 20-30's who think its odd , none of them had heard of doing this ,

Same as pulling the bottom sheet straight , they all just pull the duvet up and said its just creating work

I know I must sound old fashioned but surely after spending all night in bed they realise you need to get some fresh air on your mattress .

We all sweat during the night, and airing is to dry it out!
I have read that in some countries it is usual for people to air their bedding over the balcony every day!
I air ours most days as you do Oma.

Here in Holland the duvet etc are regularily hung out to air. Beds stripped and mattresses left to "air"! But, I don't think the younger ones do it as often as they should.

My Mil spent some time in Austria and there they put the duvets over the balcony and she always put her clothes she had worn over her window cill. I open the bed and pull the bottom
sheet straight, always open the windows when I strip the bed and leave it open for a couple of hours before I re-make it.

I do much the same. I hate wrinkles in sheets I am lying on. My Dad used to call me the Princess from the Princess and the Pea story! I have 100% high thread count cotton bedding and have suspender type things to keep the sheets pulled tight. I always pull back the covers to air the bed. A neighbour keeps their bedroom windows wide open all day which is a step too far for me in this wintry weather!

I always air my bed as you do Oma. I understand that bed bugs like to live in warm, moist conditions. This would be perfect for them. I don’t intend to share my bed with anyone least of all bed bugs. I also air the mattress when I change the bed, the pillows too.

Yes, I air the bed too. Even OH knows to pull the duvet back, although he often forgets to open the window. Unless it's howling a gale, I open all the bedroom windows, the bathrooms and the small window in the hall every morning. If it's not too cold I leave the backdoor open too.

Even though I feel the cold, I like plenty of fresh air. Sometimes I forget to close them until I'm going round drawing curtains in the evening!

I always air the bed as well. I think it could be a generation thing.
When i make the bed,i always straighten the bottom sheet, and always turn the duvet over.
That way,we never sleep with the same side of duvet covering us 2 nights running.
Sometimes I forget to like posts, but that doesn't mean I don't like them.

I do the same, always open the window and fold the duvet back. When I was a child, one of our neighbours was German and they used to hang their bedding out of the windows every morning (unless it was raining). My mother thought it very strange 🙂.

Cant bear getting into a bed with the sheets all wrinkly, takes all of a couple of minutes to pull them straight.

We all seem to think alike , when im changing the bed I hang the duvet over the Banister and have the windows and bedroom doors open for air flow ,
Maybe it was our generation and previous generation thing ,
Even with mattress covers on the mattress still needs a good airing , in my opinion , as you say Gem we all sweat during the night .

I never close bedroom doors during the day either again to let the air flow .

When I'm changing the bed I hang the duvet over the bannister and open the landing window as well.

I don't turn the duvet over every day like Nanto, because Eva gets on the bed and we'd end up with a bed full of dog hair. I keep a fluffy throw on the bed to keep most of her hairs off the duvet and that works quite well.

I think it’s a common sense thing. The thought of getting in to a wrinkly un aired bed makes me shudder! Surely it must smell of bodies after a day or two. Pillows are my thing, they must be plumped (beaten in to submission) and turned every morning.

Grauntie - my pillow gets beaten up in the night if it has the temerity to wake me up!

                            The downside of airing beds!

This morning I had to go out unexpectedly to drive my SIL to work then did a couple of other things while I was out. When I came home the cat was happily sleeping on our bed, on the sheet! I don't normally leave it to air that long, and he took advantage of it.

I air the bed too. Duvet pulled back on getting out of bed. I have the window catch on the setting that's not quite closed all the time except from when we're out. I agree, think it is a generation thing.

As for pillows, that's another story. I just can't find a comfy one. Somehow my pillow got mixed up with the others & I can't find it. Does anyone else have a favourite pillow?
