We had a fire in the house we lived in, well we thought the fire was in our house, fire alarms were going, strong smell of smoke etc.
I rang the fire service and all three of us got outside and waited for them to arrive.
They were extremely efficient as upon inspection they discovered that the fire was actually next door.
The fire chief, who was very angry at the next door neighbours , said that the fire was caused by discarded cigarette butts thrown down between the party wall dividers.
They had taken down the plaster wall in their downstairs bathroom exposing the timber frame.
He tried to explain to them that not only was it a stupid irresponsible thing to do but their home along with ours would have burnt to the ground in an incredibly fast time. All the response he got from the neighbours was
” We no understand English “
When we moved into our flat we had the opportunity for the fire service to have a look at our home , with all its fixtures and fittings and any tips and I am pleased to say we passed with flying colours but that doesn’t make us at all complacent
We have the key to the back door hanging on a hook next to the freezer. It can’t be seen by any one outside.
The key to the front door is on a shelf in the hall .
As we are live in a ground floor flat it is possible for us to climb out of our very wide large windows if we have to .
