    Fuchsias

A few month ago I bought two scrawny little fuchsia's from the reduced shelf in Morrisons , not expecting much as they were only 49p each ,
We have had very cold night in fact two nights of frost and this is them now , They bushed out and still going strong after all my other pots of flowers are gone ,

For 49p I think I have had a bargain there

I have two urns with trailing fuchsias in and they are still going strong. I would like to replant the urns but can't bring myself to pull them out. They like it cool. I have had alstroemerias (sp) flowering since June and they are very welcome in the border.

        A bargain indeed Oma

I have brought our potted geraniums into the conservatory for winter. It only has a small radiator and is not very warm (we have an electric heater we switch on if we are in there during winter) It's warm enough for plants to survive though. Last winter I left some in there and some in the garage and all the garage ones died and the ones in the conservatory survived.

Gem, I think the conservatory plants survived, they don’t mind the cold but need the light, which the garage ones didn’t get. Even plants suffer from SAD Seasonal Affected Disorder.

Oma, they’ve done really well. I’ve got a huge pot with a very pretty hardy fuchsia in and it must be at least 30 years old. I leave it out all winter but don’t cut it back until the new growth starts in the spring. I’ve repotted it once and just feed and top dress it in the spring.

They’re one of my favourite plants!

I’ve got a couple of geraniums in the greenhouse and hopefully they will survive in there. If it’s really cold I’ll put a small heater in because I’ve got other tender plants there as well. Someone told me that geraniums like it dry in the winter so last year I didn’t water them until about March/April and they were fine.

Hmm, I didn't consider the light factor Sunshine!
They had been in the greenhouse (unheated) until a couple of weeks ago until I rescued them all and brought them into the conservatory.

Oma you have a real bargain there, something that brightens up the day I might add.
I only said to John the other day how sad it was for the plants in Aldi to be left unwatered and dried up when it would take 2 mins to water them they where by the bin outside the shop I should have asked if I could take them but the shop was packed at the time.
Fuchsia are also one of my favourite plants we have some hardy ones just outside our front door we have had them about 3 yrs now.

I like fuchsias as well. You got a good bargain there Oma.
A few years ago, hubby bought some pansies from Tesco.
They were bit neglected and hubby bought them for 10p.
He nursed them and we had one of the best displays ever.

Daisy when we had our big greenhouse I always over wintered my geraniums in there un watered , I would cover them with a little fleece , same with my fuchsia. sadly I no longer have a green house or a conservatory or anywhere I can over winter them indoors

Glamm I say the same with our Aldi , why do they get so many plants in when they so neglect them ,

I have just thought though we do have windows in the shed and a bench under the window , I might be able to persuade B to move some of his tools along a bit and put them in there to try and save them , its worth a try isn't it

What a good buy Oma. Very pretty. I say the same about our Aldi plants. They're always dried up & neglected. Maybe they need to teach a member of staff in each store how to look after them. We're the only ones in our road whose hanging basket is still up & alive, including fuchsia & geranium. No greenhouse either so no hope for the latter I'm afraid..

Oma, it's definitely worth trying to save your fuchsias and geraniums in the shed - after all B's tools definitely won't grow on the bench, but your plants might!!

My fuchsias in the outside urns looked very sad after Jack Frost visited them in the night.

Plant, my big fuchsia is starting to look a bit sad, but it will be ok in the garden against a wall (I hope!)
